From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Session 6
Safe travels sir. We look forward to your posting.

Dere st road trip
I am putting this under Dere Street road trip for reasons that mostly amuse me!

Interesting stuff from Binchester, a site with many similarities to Vindolanda....

Weather conditions so far
much better than last season. session three lost no time to weather. four had a few issues, I think one complete rain day and bits of others. current session appears also to be doing well.

Now there's something you don't see every day....
WeDiggers being a well traveled and far flung tribe it is certainly possible that you may wander through eastern France.

If so, don't miss The Shrine of Hercules

Fun stuff, gives an excavator extravagant dreams...

Nice view from Barcomb, thanks for posting it.

It looks from afar as if the goal of one layer down on the entire SE quadrant is on target. The spoil heap will be moving in the forseeable future but the overall situation looks to be "half way done and half the time gone". A far cry from last year....

If there were random rocks and rubble in the Great Robber Trench I suppose we may assume diligent stone robbers in the last couple hundred years.

I had a similar puzzlement. The stones all around it look to be of highly variable quality, yet the robber trench seems to be pretty well cleaned up. Or did the excavators indeed have to pick out all the crummy bits of rubble? But to imagine a cottage there? Hard to see it. Later buildings just got plopped down amidst whatever. Probably a layer of dirt to make the floor level.

A less appealing notion....maybe this was robbed out because it was a largely intact Roman building.....
