From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

I have known a couple of diggers over the years able to stay at the Once Brewed youth hostel. If you are stern of resolve it could be done. Or, you stay at the Twicey and son experiences the cultural gamish of the hostel. How old is the lad?

It is inconsistent to make the case to the Chancelloress of the Exchequer that this is an invaluable experience for your son....and then to quibble over a few pence. Go for whatever would give him the most memorable experience and don't fret about a little more money.

Is he of age to enjoy a pint at the Twicey? If so, then go for it.

You could of course stay at the Hedley. It has some advantages:

there seem to be some excavation slots reserved for Hedley dwellers.
you can't beat the commute
my week there I had good company...not quite as good as rowdy mates at the pub, but I recall we went over every night anyway!
you would be supporting the Trust

I traveled quite a bit with my sons when they were 10 to 15 years old. Don't regret a single trip, nor a single euro, pound, piaster or other monetary unit spent.

2013 Excavations and the new SMC
Understood.

Archeology is after all less about how things were than about how they change.

And that process never ends.

'The work we will be doing over the next SMC is far more technical than before'

Any additional details?

The missing members are probably chinese spammer bots. Once in a while we have to sweep out a nest of 'em.

farewell MMXII
End of the season at Vindolanda. Thanks to all the WeDig contributors and of course to the hard working folks who had to overcome much adversity along the way.
