From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Andy, I am worried about you not getting enough sleep. Your replies (at least as I view them) are timed at 3.30 AM or thereabouts. Can't you sleep?

Thanks Andy for a very informative reply. I will be interesting to see who I get to dig with in June.

I dug for 2 weeks last yearand despite finding nothing more exciting than a boar's tusk, a very small piece of Roman glass and a stone game counter (plus sundry other items) I will be returning this year to see if I can have more luck. Perhaps an altar, calendar or even just one coin would be great.

I was placed in a trench on day one with 3 others who had never used a trowel before. Their only exposure to excavating was watching Time Team. I have a reasonable amount of experience (2 Roman villas, etc) and so could keep an eye on them and offer advice. I appreciate that Andy, Alex and Beth do walkabouts but I did wonder why the newbies were not put in trenches with some of the 'oldies' i.e. those wearing tee shirts indicating they had dug at Vindolanda in previous years, to benefit from their advice.

Perhaps Andy might care to comment.

Well, that's me for the latrines! Oh the latrines. Will we find them this year and solve the mystery of the large drain in the fort wall?
