From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Roman Britain novels - a survey
Hi Lillian

I am a great fan of Lindsey Davis and her "private informer" Marcus Didius Falco. All her books are great fun with well drawn settings and interesting characters. Her first Falco book "The Silver Pigs" is largely set in Roman Britain (AD 70) in a silver mine. Falco later returns to what we know as Fishbourne Roman Palace (during its construction) in "A Body in the Bath House".
I would certainly recommend these two books but all the Falco stories are entertaining.

"Area A" Team Photos 2010
This is the Area A Team for the 25th-29th July.

Had a great week digging, weather was mostly grey with occasional drizzle, apart from the Thursday when we had the photo! We were mostly excavating in the barrack rooms or looking for the underlying (2nd fort?) wall.

Some of us also attended an evening lecture at the Roman Army Museum given by a team of archaeologists from Vietnam (with suitable translation by an English historian working with them!). This was the first time ever that this has been allowed by the Vietnamese authorities and, apart from being an interesting lecture (a project to investigate a long wall with remarkable parallels to Hadrian's wall), I felt privileged to be able to attend such an special event.

As always, the week was over far too quickly and I'm looking forward to being a volunteer again next year. :)
