From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

When worlds collide
Tim, thanks for both the preceding posts, I had somehow managed to miss the one linking to the Googlified Roman world map, so it was interesting to poke around on that for a while. I should have known it already, but it revealed to me for the first time the interesting connection between Birdoswald and Bewcastle.

I was also blissfully unaware of the connection between New Ulm, MN and The Empire, so that was also a good read.

How are we going to survive until Period 1?

Now there's something you don't see every day....
Thanks for posting Tim, that is pretty extraordinary! I'm surprised it hasn't had more news coverage - 1.5 million tons of earth moved to make it, 5M pounds to make it and other big numbers as well. I wonder what people will make of it two thousand years from now? Might be worth a visit in July...

And they are still there, including period 1 availability as an "excavate only" slot...

2013 applications
Still space for diggers in periods 1 & 2...

But I think my suggestion would work perfectly for you, Colonel (and others in the cricket-playing former southern colonies!). You could go to bed at the normal hour Nov 1, safe in the knowledge that you could check at 10am NZ time Nov 2nd, when there would be another set of places coming online you could apply for...

As Sue has mentioned earlier in this thread, being in the UK/Europe at noon/1pm doesn't necessarily mean you will have free access to the web at that time, due to particular demands of your job during the work day.

As far as it being a nightmare to do a two-phase system, it really depends how the software is set up. The Trust has been putting slots back into the "available" queue quite frequently over the last few days, so I'm guessing it might not be too hard, possibly as simple as changing the value of one number at the second wave - the number of available spaces remaining in each period.

Andy, what do you think?

2013 applications
Thanks Andy. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall to hear the discussion between the would-be digger and his spouse. I suggest a heavy dose of Time Team for the missus, and perhaps next year he'll have better luck. :P

Also, good to know for next year that once you have the item in the basket you are no longer having to race for the places. Takes some of the pressure off.

A quick additional thought on the Nov 1 roll-out.
The noon release time works well for me, because it falls at 8AM US East Coast time, but I can see that for some people (especially UK/Europe) it might be very difficult due to overlap with the work-day. To try and "even the playing field" a little more, perhaps there could be two stages of roll-out, with 12 noon for the first half of the places and then another one 9 hrs later for the remainder?

Thanks Tim.

For those still chafing over missing out, as of 10:45PM UK time there are excavator openings for FIVE different periods available on the Trust website, including two different periods for "excavation only" (ie: not including stay at the Hedley). Get 'em while they're hot...

Same here, email to Fiona was the solution for me too.

NB: There's at least one excavation slot available for period 1 at the Hedley right now for those still interested...

Just wanted to echo Sue's comment, we should all bear in mind that the Trust is not a major corporation with a large IT budget. There are bound to be some less polished aspects to the booking system, especially when they have changed to the two-week system this year, with two people registering at once. Digging at Vindolanda is well publicized and has become extremely popular, so there are a lot more people who want to dig than there are places. Sometimes we'll miss out despite getting onto the system on day one. They are doing their best to be fair to everyone.

So does anyone have any information about the error message you get when clicking the link in the "receipt" email? I'm still getting that today, and I've had no other communication from the Trust. Can I assume that my application (and my 16 yr old son's) is accepted and I'm good to go, or is there still some processing of applications going on?

BTW Cestrian, if all is well I'll be on site with you in period 7...

I didn't think to try the link in the email until much later in the day, still showing the same error. I'm hoping for the best though, already booked some accommodation! Waiting for more formal confirmation before I pay $2100 for two transatlantic flights though. :X

I'm guessing there's no problem beyond the fact that the server has just got too many people trying to access content at the same time. I was refreshing my browser every 10 seconds or so from 5 minutes before UK noon, so I'm confident I got in there very close to the beginning. In terms of when my browser picked up the live links, I think it actually went online at 11:58 and 50 seconds. Roughly. :D

kaycham, are you saying you got the "thanks for your order" email as well as confirmation from Andy that you are accepted? I just got the confirmation that I had successfully bought the digging period.

When I click the link in that email I get a single line of text in the browser window, red bold text, saying "Error, file cannot be downloaded at this time".

23 minutes and everything appears to be gone...

Wow, I just checked the "Excavation only" link, nothing left at 8:12, and only 4 periods left on "Excavation & Stay". I guess the two-week minimum hasn't slowed anything down... :o

Everything seemed very smooth for me, 8:04 (12:04 UK) and I was finished. Hopefully that will be fast enough! B)
