From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Interesting pair of pictures, it appears the later one shows a much higher rebuilt wall. Was this added using spare stones, or were the stones removed prior to your first photo and then reassembled?

Happy New Year to all.

Its worth asking, but I think it might be expecting a lot to put it all on one person's shoulders for a whole digging season. The easy part is taking the picture, the time-consuming bit is getting it uploaded somewhere after a hard day's digging, and knowing Kevin, he would probably rather be supping some ale at the TBI than sitting by a computer with a camera or SD card getting it onto the web. I would bet that we can get most weeks covered with volunteers from the forum.

Definitely a great idea. We would probably need Andy's help to know the likely extent of digging over the course of the season, so the photo location is set correctly from the start.

Would also need to position the camera so its facing roughly north, so the sun doesn't screw up the picture (if/when it decides to come out). When I've done similar things myself in the past I found it helped to have "landmarks" at each corner of the picture, so I knew I had the photo pretty accurately repeating.

People with SLR cameras would be ideal, because it would be easier to define the focal length (ie: set camera at 40mm setting), but I'm guessing we'd be doing well just to get a picture every week, let alone require it be done with fancier cameras.

I will do the week I'm on site. May want to start up another list Harry so we can encourage people to sign up for a shot.
