From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Pompeii exhibition
I went to the Museum of Science in Boston earlier this month and caught the end of a traveling show of artefacts from Pompeii. Being used to seeing Roman pottery and assorted items coming out of the ground in small pieces and covered in soil, its hard to grasp seeing things looking like they only stopped being used a few years ago. The colours/colors of the plaster painting in particular took my breath away. I thought I'd post a few shots I took (without flash, I hasten to add) for everyone to enjoy. There's one below, with a link to a short gallery of a dozen more. If the exhibition is coming to a city anywhere near you, I highly recommend you go see it (Cincinnati March to August, Denver September to Jan 2013 I believe are next, don't know if its coming to Europe).

Pompeii was already on my bucket list (hopefully Karl Pilkington won't be there if I ever make it over there), but now I've really got to make sure I do it before I die...

What to bring?
I have to put in a plug for the Twice Brewed Inn, one of the reasons I'm staying there again is that I can get a good meal after a long slog in the trenches, and its a short stagger from my room! Its a regular pub so anyone can go in for a pint and some food (and the best pub-quiz around...hopefully not the same day as the Hedley buffet, the diggers need to put a strong team in to keep up the reputation!)

Vindolanda on TV
This is frustrating, iPlayer content is unavailable in the US... I'd be willing to pay for access, I wish there was a way they could sort out the media rights issue.

Unless anyone knows of a way round the block?

(rather a boring way to bring up my 100th post  )
