From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Week 15 (and 14 recap!)
louisa's photo is a great example of what we are finding at several areas of the site now although it is completely underwater just now and the weather wont give us a break! Myself and a team of 3 have started de-turfing an area of the vicus (beside the butchers shop and directly across from the severan commander's residence) very early days yet but proves how much progress has been achieved - well ahead of schedule!

Week 15 (and 14 recap!)
to be honest sue - if i were you id be more worried about being near that big tea urn in the shed than being near the soil!!!! Hope your well on the mend now!

Week 15 (and 14 recap!)
howdy everyone, kev here.
Over the last few weeks work has been taking place in three main areas - the bottom of temple avenue (south) including the bottom barrack room, the centurions apartment at the top of the same block and also in the south east corner of the excavation where the antonine centurions apartment was. The latter area has been fascinating with floor surface after floor surface after floor surface! At the end of play today however, the team there are coming onto some wonderfully stained clay outlines of timber structures. what period these belong to have still to be interpreted but we are nearly 1.5 metres down from the grass level. Temple avenue south is also at an ever deepening level and anybody who remembers the actual temple avenue will be amazed at the transformation of this area. Again there are loads of post holes and the whiff of anaerobic is never far away but so far vindolandas early periods are keeping their secrets hidden. This week we have moved north on temple avenue and are dropping the levels too. Similarly, there is now a team dropping the antonine barrack floors up towards the north gate with some great insights into construction techniques revealing themselves. Finally, The 213 centurions apartment has provided great archaeology (he obviously had a thing about pits) and under his floor we have a section of roundhouse, road cobbles (antonine timber fort)?, crushed brick floor, loads of burning, strange groupings of rubble etc etc. Hope this helps a little bit folks - im now going to attempt to upload a few pics that were taken at the end of today so they are as up to date as possible, cheers!
