From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Stone Sources Project
I haven't added to my 2010 geoblog (now collated in the Digger's Guide to Vindolanda forum) this year as Malise and I have only managed 3 weeks in total at Vindolanda. However, I have not been inactive with the Stone Sources Project and I'm honoured to announce that my first report has just been published on the main Vindolanda website. You'll find it on the excavation reports page at http://www.vindolanda.com/doorway-articles/excavation-reports alongside Kate S-F's excellent paper on the mortaria stamps. I'll add comments on further progress with the project under this topic.

In the report I have acknowledged the formal advice and comments which Andy, Robin and the County Geologist David Lawrence have made. But I'd like to use this posting to thank also all those diggers who have expressed interest and encouragement and especially those who have offered helpful suggestions. I was particularly grateful to the digger, whose name I regret I have forgotten, who pointed out back in May that the conical pits along the northern edge of Barcombe Hill are probably bell-pits. I'm confident he was right and his suggestion was very helpful to me in sorting out the various types of quarrying on the hill. If he would care to make himself known I'd be please to thank him personally.

As the nights draw in I shall be peering down my microscope and longing for the start of next season. Look forward to seeing many of you then.

Mike McG
