From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Week 9
Day 4 in "Sunny Valley/Claire's corner"
Not so Sunny today. Rained quite heavily all day. Andrew called an early lunch and early finish.
Managed to clean and define a bit more of the drains but no pics, but will update for my final day tomorrow.
Claire, the interesting thing is that the cobbled flooring in that corner seems to finish where you left it. There is a big clay bank in front of it and another clay bank where I was digging. The drain runs all the way to the back of the trench and expands as it progresses.
And the depth just keeps going down as we go.
I am hoping that tomorrow is fine as I would like to have the drain open in all its glory before I leave.
I do think that the digger that inherits this piece of ground will have an interesting time though as there is the potential for another anaerobic gully there.

Week 9
Last two
Scott' s wall opened up a little more and an overall shot.
Hope that helps a bit

Week 9
Anaerobic Gully

Week 9
4C after drain clean up

Week 9
New trench south of 7C
Sorry about the numerous posts but I have to work out how to reduce photo size.

Week 9
Part 2

Week 9
There doesn't seem to be any other photos being posted so here a few of the rest of the site where the group have worked this week.
First two are of the trenches opened looking for the water sump(7c I think)

Week 9
Day 3 in 4"something"
We continued cleaning out the 3 definite drain/trench systems today although our anticipated hoarde of finds didn't eventuate.
My drain drops quite dramatically the futher we progress. It is at least 12 inches lower than the week 7 finishing point.
As can be seen in the pictures it is also opening out.
The middle drain petered out but Ian and Marcel are still working there for the moment.
The surprising trench is Horse Head Gully, after Dave's spectacular finds during week 7 this has become very sterile in finds.
Lots of bones in all drains, a deer antler and pig tusk in Lynn and my drain but thats about it.
Better luck tomorrow.
cheers Paul

Week 9
Day two in 4A,
We finally cleared the road in the final minutes before lunch. One or two good finds which will help with dating.
Speaking of which after Justin's twitter yesterday morning we did find some good dateable finds including an amphora handle with stamp. So that should keep him happy.
After lunch we split into groups to work the 3 distinct drains from the previous weeks diggings.
So yes Claire, I am working the drain you and I worked in week 7,
Marcel and Ian are working Sunny's patch and Lisa is working in the "horse head trench"
I have included a photoof the work progressing to the West of out trench which is beig openedup this week.
Cheers Paul
ps. Thanks for the welcome Badger

Week 9
Ok Guys,
Thought I should post some updates since I have been onsite for 2 and a bit weeks.
I have spent most of my time in 4A right back to week 7 with Claire and Sonny.
Continued this week in same area and today's task was to remove the cobbled surface of the road. Good progress and some good finds.
Hopefuly tomorrow will see the end of the road and we can get into the good dark soil. It will be interesting to see what the clay is doing.
cheers Paul B
