From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

20th Aug. Looking south.
Period 4/5 forts western defences. (Period 4 105Ė 122 AD. Period 5 122-140 AD)
Notes are given in good faith but not guaranteed, so here go's :ermm: (I donít know about the military annex you mentioned David).
These larger forts had stone gateways and rampart support walls with timber and turf walls. Justin thinks the gate is from period 4 fort and was reused for period 5 fort, which was on a slightly different alignment to 4.
The wall and gate misalignment is seen in this photo, which shows the base of the stone gateway with a drain running through, further back is the rampart wall. The gate seems quite narrow, Justin thinks there could have been a double arch but no foundation has yet been found to the north.
