From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

From Dave's email:

"The titles are in the picture name, but some description is shown below.

The Drain Area

Myself, my buddy John and our two "apprentices", Ami and Flora had the honour of removing a fine, late drain (day 1 photo). Underneath the drain and the late cobbles was a much earlier and ather nice cbbled surface. The "destruction (controlled)" of the drain was rather satisfying. There were a number of good finds, but the rather special one was a piece of painted mortaria and a spindle whirl.

The Barracks (east)
John and I were posted to this location for the forst two days and cleaned up the roadway in front of this barrack room. We did spend a considerable amount of time talking to the public (customers) an showing them our fine array of finds, among which was part of an ointment mixing pallette.

Barcombe Hill
The photo shows what I have ben lead to believe is a Roman carving of a phallus. I do not share that opinion, it looks more like a mouses head and Roman....not sure about that. Comments/debate please."
