From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Gildas is the worst! Gets so close to actually saying something useful so many times, only to leave us hanging.

Re the stealing, I'm finding that even with all these so-called "early modern" historians. They baldly steal each others' works, sometimes whole chapters, and pretend it's their own. There's a guy, Raphaell Holinshed, writing of his travels in Britain in 1577. I thought, cool, someone in-between Leland and Camden. See what's he's got. Turns out it's the same thing as Leland's description above, almost word for word -- including the colloquialisms. Holinshed -does- add maybe a sentence on forts in the eastern half of the Wall. But my guess is he had access to a leaf of Leland's notes that didn't appear in the 1906 edition. And yet he's trying to pass it off as his own observations. Grumble.
