From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

The massive E/W Antonine wall-that-doesn't-belong-there, quickly reflooding.
Is it possible they put this odd wall in is as part of some kind of anti-flooding or water-redirecting measure? Basically shoring up a bank behind, with the intention of directing water away from the fort area? Or to collect it? It also seems like it can't be coincidence that the later drain parallels it exactly.

That's a really nice bit of wall, clearly some substantial effort was put into it for a significant reason in their eyes. Trying to come up with something plausible from 3,000 miles away...
