From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Your Week 1 correspondent took 2 weeks R & R (much needed) in the Black Isle (Ross And Cromarty - part of Highland Region, Scotland). With this view to contemplate it was mighty tempting to not return to the trenches!

However, we couldn't let Andy and the other HJCBs (Human JCBs) down so on Sunday the 13th of April I took a weather check outside the Twicey. Compare this with that of week 1 and you can see my 'hack' is now standing out like a polar bear against a blackboard!

By the way, this is the resident 'hack' where my R & R took place!

So I turned up on site and for once I was not the first there! But first things first: the hut - or lack of it!

Whoops! I forgot to take a piccy on Day 5, but I can report that it is erected and being fitted out. Perhaps someone from week 4 will provide a pic of it if they took one, otherwise a Week 5er could do the deed.

So, start of week pix. I really should learn how to merge pictures into one to cut down on the number of posts required. Perhaps that will be my task for the coming months.

This pic shows the east wall of the western granary. This area and the west wall of the eastern granary were the main 'targets' this week. OK, OK; it is where I was working so I took pics of this and not other areas.

Start of day 2 and here is a view down the alley-way between the two granaries

Well, I could bore you with pictures of work in progress and details of the buttresses but instead here is the end of week photo of the east side of the western granary complete with our noble leader putting his camera away after taking the team mug-shots.

Here is a detail from the western wall of the eastern granary (are you still with me?). It shows an air-vent which allows the air in under the floor to aerate the grain - thus showing that this granary was a grain granary. And to think that in week one it was not a granary at all!

I could not resist - here is a buttress from the western granary - nicely chamfered and nice base

And it's next door neighbour - the base will need a bit of work!

And finally - honest! - a better vie of the eastern granary so you can comapre the styles of the buttresses (and the grand figure of HJCB Jim).

Once again, I have other pics of both the walls and other parts of the western granary. Anyone wants them I can zip the whole 2008 folder and email them. Just pm me.
