From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Results from some experiments in soil flotation.

The general idea is that you add water to a soil sample and anything that floats is collected. What floats tends to be charcoal, seeds and small bones.

Here you can see a larger animal bone to the right of centre, small bones in the centre and a blackened seed to the left You can see more charcoal and seeds around the edges of this shot.

In the test samples so far there has been much more charcoal and seed remains than bones - unfortunately my camera is having focusing problems so this is my only reasonable picture!

For scale, the larger bone to the right is approximately 15-18mm.

Hi Matt,

Us HJCB's became expert sievers in Week 1 and managed to find one or two interesting things under the turf in Week 2 (July 6th - 11th)!!!!

However we do have the HJCB T-shirts.

Enjoy your weeks at Vindolanda,

Kate. B)

Hi Andy the second one was bound to be more civilised as Beth is in it and in the first one it looks as though one of the diggers was disturbed by the results of someones curry the night before....Tee hee  ;) That one should be on 'Caption Fun'........
