From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

This year's excavation within SF II barracks has given some real head scratsher questions. What could possibly happened is your scenario of the town moving inside the fort at the end of the 3rd C as troops were taken away from wall defence and sent to the mainland. The archaeology from this year seems to point to the fact that the far west of the vicus is out of use in the 4th century, or very limited use. The vicus may have changed location outside the fort or the garrison may not be 500 strong leaving quadrants of the fort open for use by families and merchants (Riacus). In the next few years I imagine a better answer will emerge to your question, Harry.
