From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Barring discovery of some implausible Historia Vindolandicus at the bottom of a well, we will be left with speculation on the question. Yours seem well reasoned.

But, in defense of the "home team", it should be noted that neither Vindolanda nor to my knowlege any of the major Wall forts were ever sacked in a fashion that has been archeologically obvious. So to base their competence on the straightness of their masonry seems a bit harsh.

Of course, there are lots of plausible scenarios that reconcile incompetence and survival.

1. Barbarian hordes streaming past on their way to sack York, making rude Monty Python taunts "You Empty Headed Cleaners of Latrini!"
2. Barbarian hordes streaming past shouting "Thanks cousin Hafnir, we'll bring you something from Londinium!"
3. A very efficient system for bribing the local tribes so that they do not annoy the Boy Scout garrison.
