From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

I am curious on a couple of points....was that thing found standing upright? From a post elsewhere it sounds as if it weighs a great deal, so setting it upright does not sound sensible, but from one camera angle it looks as if in its upright alignment it would have stuck up above turf level.

And, why the second trench so far from the main area? Extra big work force that week?

Thanks Lyn, that explains it.

Thinking about it a bit more, it would have had to weigh a great deal more than 1.5 tonnes to prevent Andy and Justin heaving it upright to see what was on the back side!
