From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

1st Sept. Looking North.
Dilys and Jim starting to removing the baulk separating north and south areas of the barracks. The cobbles of the west intervallum road in the foreground. In the background the mystery wall just inside the fort north wall. A day lost to the rain this week, and one day last week too.
The intervallum road is like a ring road around the inside of the fort walls.

7th Sept. Looking south. Into the last week now.
Photo shows the northwest corner of the intervallum road with the last grassed part of west rampart remaining on the right.

7th Sept. Looking west.
No waiting on the wheelbarrow run! The baulk width is nibbled away from north and south. There are some larger areas of flagged floors here.

7th Sept. Looking east.
Theyíve cleared tons! crossed the west road and are clearing a good flagged floor, possibly a centurions house. North road is on the left. In the background diggers are working on another cobbled road running north/south with a central row of stone drain channelling.
Beyond that is the next barrack block (?) and next years dig! :)

10th Sept Looking east.
The last day, how sad, with beautiful weather to finish on.
Almost there, Simon is working in the central north/south passageway.

12th Sept. Looking south. This is at the north end of the central passageway.
In this area a confusing array of walls which donít seem to line up, and have odd looking endings, are built into the passage, blocking the way through.
Walls upon walls, this shows the problems of subsequent buildings during the long occupation of Vindolanda. Thatís part of next years story, fortunately we volunteers donít have to figure it all out, we can just come along and enjoy it.

12th Sept. Looking north.
Junction of the north/south road (with stone drain) and the north intervallum road. The lighter coloured stone is a corner of the next building to the east, in the top right corner is the wall of the north gatehouse.
