From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Too bad they aren't doing this later in the year! I'd love to see it.

This looks lovely. I really wish that I could get to it, but (alas) it's the same weekend as the AD410 conference at the BM http://www.410.org.uk/confs.htm

Hopefully there will be some videos, just to make me feel even more sick that I couldn't go (sob). ;)

I've put my name down to be an 'illuminator' after a talk by Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd. last week .
We will find out if we have been chosen on the 22nd of Feb.
At the lecture I attended they said they needed 514 volunteers to light the entire wall, and so far they have received 1100 applications. So I have a 50/50 chance of making it.
I think it will be brilliant, plus the two events at Carlisle and Wallsend should be well worth a look if anyone is in the area.

I think that it will look OK, so long as it doesn't rain or there is a heavy fog, in which case it will be a little bit underwhelming. So here's to a bright star filled night in March! Don't forget to take a flask of something warm with you. You can be sure that the soldiers patrolling the wall did.

I've been picked. It is all starting to take shape now. 1,300 people are going to light up the Hadrian's Wall with various pieces of lighting. Candles, torches and burners. It will look amazing at dusk. There are 13 'muster points' on the day. We all meet up at 1pm, then we will be given transport to our 'cells' as they are calling them, by bus. Each cell will be two miles long and have a small team of volunteers, plus a team leader who will look after their own section. I'm at Harlow Hill for those of you who know Northumberland.

I hope you can see it all from Vindolanda.
Which gods do I have to pray to for a dry day?

Just noticed that the event has its own Web site: http://www.illuminatinghadrianswall.com/

Looks like it's going to be quite a sight. For those (like myself) who can't be there, don't forget that WeDig has two live streaming video feeds at the So, How's the Weather? page that point directly at the Wall -- one at Winshields, the other at Cawfields. I've got it on my calendar to check out.

Neat group of pictures from the event: http://www.flickr.com/groups/hadrian.

And a -serious- winner for compilation flyover videos (great stuff crammed into just 30 seconds): http://heritage-key.com/blogs/ann/light-video-footage-illuminating-hadrians-wall

Harry - Thanks so much for posting the photos and links. I have been waiting for days to see this, even though I won't be at the Wall until June.

My pleasure Beverly! Great article in the Journal Live: http://www.journallive.co.uk/north-east-news/environment-news/2010/03/15/history-made-as-hadrian-s-wall-illuminated-61634-26031565/. There's an interview there with the Twice Brewed's own Brian Keen. It all just looks like it was a great time.

Yes it did Harry.
I walked up to Winshields Crags just north of Twice Brewed, wondering just how many people would be out. The roadside was lined with abandoned cars and loads of people walking to the Wall.

This beacon was just east of Winshields Crag, the sun has set and the official lighters are all prepared.
