From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Welcome to We Dig Vindolanda!

Hi all,

With 1 week before 2010 kick off I thought it best to set up the 2010 forum. People may like to separate the areas out later on, but as Vindolanda is one site, it should have one general forum for the 2010 excavations as well, so here it is. This is a big year for the Vindolanda Trust in many ways. The 40th anniversary year of the Trust, the HLF implementation year, and of course we hope that it will be another excellent year on the excavations.

Lets hope for some sunshine.

best,

Andy

Golly-gosh! Is it really 40 years since I did my first real dig with my, newly, ex-history master!?! I remember so little about it apart from the phrase 'going to turn my bike round' - a euphenism for visiting the, non-existent, latrines!

Welcome to WeDig, glad you had such a great week!

I'd love to see pics too! (And I have a hunch I'm not alone.) A bunch of new folks just signed up to WeDig in the past couple of days. Hopefully someone has photos from the first week that they'll share. For the moment MichaelH (a WeDig rock!) has a couple shots from the very first day.

Also, as a note to everyone -- anytime someone has pictures but is having any trouble getting them up to the site, always feel free to drop me an e-mail or private message; I'm more than happy to help.

hippacrocrapig (interesting nom de cursor that) welcome indeed.

There tends to be a lapse of a few days to eternity for the posting of pictures. Most people have to get back home and get their lives back off vacation before posting. The invaluable Michael lives locally.

Vindo is that rarest of experiences, a true adventure in the modern world. I was pretty astounded after my first visit, and am gearing up for my third. I shall be applying trowel to cobblestones in area B in 16 days.

In addition to photos, WeDiggers live for digging accounts. Tell us what you can!

But keep a couple guidelines in mind.

Items of genuine archeological import, like last years altar, should be announced to the world at the discretion of, and in person by, the Vindolanda Trust. Don't even tease us with hints.

And, be very careful when discussing anything that might attract shady night time metal detectionist raiders. Its ok to mention pottery shards, bones, features like roads and foundations.

Not ok to mention if you found a hoard of aurei!

Borderline call: small late roman coinage. I think its ok to say you found some of this stuff, but I would add that there were nails everywhere!

Did they find that north south road yet?

40th Anniversary of Vindolanda Trust

I joined as a Friend in 1970 when it was first set up - yes, and have found the letter proving the status!

Mike and I dug in what was the 'Mansio' but has since been renamed - who can guess what it is now? No prizes for guessing! - in 1972. He found an altar, I got sunburnt and found nothing. His first and only time in a trench, bit unfair, that. (the altar is in the Museum). We stayed in a B&B down the road at Bardon Mill and walked up every day, and we worked for Robin Birley, Andy not even being thought of at that time.

The great find of the Tablets was made not long after we'd been up for a Friends Day and I always remember Eric Birley, upon seeing our thirsty dog which we had brought with us (dogs were allowed on site in them thar days), promptly getting her a bowl of water! (in the old West Entrance among the many photographs there was one of us at this Friends day - very sobering for us, looking at what a hairy pair we were in those days. LOL)

After a lapse of about 15 years I rejoined in 1995 and in 1997 did an obligatory week's excavation - sorry, can't remember which bit of the fort it was - for my Advanced Certificate in Archaeology from Nottingham University, and we've been two of the many Friends ever since. You might know me as the volunteer pot-washer who comes in May every year, and sometimes in September.

This year, as a first for us, we have rented a house nearby for 6 lovely months, to be close to what is the best archaeological site there is. I shall be able to do more pot-washing and Mike has volunteered to do another week in a trench, Andy's this time, ....pity it's taken nearly him 40 years to do the following week! Mike has got involved in the Stone Project partly as a result of finishing his OU Degree in Earth Sciences and he felt he ought to have a hands-on experience with the many lumps of rock, so please treat him kindly.....

So we will be around most of the season...

Malise & Michael McGuire
