For those of you who are desperate for Roman pix, try googling "Binchester Blog" for details of the 2011 season's dig at this site in County Durham. Forty students from Stanford University, California, along with about a dozen local volunteers (including Terry and Pauline) are excavating the fort (Trench 1) and the vicus (Trench 2). Green Glaze mediaeval pottery is still coming out (with Roman pottery) in Trench 1, but the vicus is grabbing the best finds. A small altar was found there today, amongst some rubble and there's a couple of photos. The important major Roman road, Dere Street (the mediaeval name for it) runs through the vicus and the fort. This is year 3 of a 5 year plan, but hopefully, further funding will be found to continue excavating way beyond 2013.
