Placeholder for the current week. Justin's tweets suggest more big work in the northern part of the site (probably Zone 5n on the weekly map), digging down into the early 2nd Century.

If anyone's on site and can drop a line, as always please do!

And with favorable weather forecasts we expect big things, diggers.

The ditch sounds wicked cool (as they say here in New England). Calling all WeDig'ers: let's see the ditch! Pics please.

Managed to get a few pictures of the ditch during my brief guest appearance last Friday...

The ditch running underneath the roundhouse in the Centurian's appartment. It's not very obvious in this picture but the profile clearly shows several levels of occupation. The vertical indentations in the face of the profile are post holes and deeper down in the anaerobic levels is a wooden post in situ (above the centre of the second red stripe from the left on the pole).

The ditch in a wider context running east - west.
Justin summed up this area perfectly as "Vindolanda in microcosm". Visible are the early ditch with evidence of several levels of the early forts, Antonine brick and cobbled floors, the Severan roundhouse and the 3rd century walls of the Centurian's apartment!

Sitting here, back at work, I envy those lucky enough to be there this week trying to find further traces of the ditch a few metres to the east (left on the photo above), should be fun and exciting!
