Mary has obliged with a great teaser shot from Day 1. Involving very large machines!![]() From Mary: "Very rainy on site today (we lost the last hour of the day to the weather), but we did have some big helpers! The digger trucks are taking out a lot of the turf and backfill, and making very quick work of it. I'll try to send updated photos tomorrow but they cleared a LOT of land today." Now that's what I call speed archaeology.

So... I participated in the Twice Brewed pub quiz last night, and wasn't exactly in top form this morning. I definitely forgot to bring my camera to the site, but will get some photos for you all ASAP. The site has significantly changed from last week thanks to the lovely digger - hopefully some other folks took photos today! |

Using mechanical diggers is just cheating, I'm afraid! Not that I'm at all jealous after all the turf and dirt we shifted... |

Deturfing is back-breaking work and it sounds like much of the stuff removed was old back-fill, so seems fair enough! I took the liberty of adjusting shadows/highlights on Mary's photo, its a bit easier to see what was revealed now. Hope you don't mind. What's happening to quiz standards at the TBI? A cocktail shaker sounds vaguely useful! Edited by Justin-T, Apr 25 2012, 12:36 PM.

More big thanks to Mary for another great batch of shots today! Especially given the cold, wind, and rain. Hard days for digging! Here is an updated plan for Week 4: ![]() Sites 4a and 4b growing. A new site, 4c, just to the east of the old storehouse first exposed many decades ago. To the east of the path, Sites 1a and 1b seem to have grown and merged too. From Mary, with her captions: ![]() "Very cold and windy today with a good amount of rain at the end. Here is a shot of the site looking upward toward the diggers' hut." (Standing at east edge of 4c, looking NW) ![]() "Looking down the aqueduct toward the diggers hut." (Standing at east edge of 4a, looking W) ![]() "Looking down toward the tool shed." (Standing at NW edge of 1a, looking SE) ![]() "Other side of the aqueduct..." (Standing at NE corner of 4a/4b, looking SW) |

Some good pictures, lots of fresh areas appearing. Looks like the weather hasn't helped this month. Optimistic for next week, still going to pack my Bermuda shirt! |

People generally pay extra for an en suite! Looks like the diggers are heading for the hut so they can regularly warm up with cups of tea. |
