I was digging in trench 4b this week, directly south of the aqueduct wall. This basically involved dropping down to the line of the huge perimeter ditch mentioned in previous weeks, which seemed to be curving around from N to E as it passed under the aqueduct. The ditch being so deep and wide, it was fairly slow progress, although some interesting finds came out towards the end of the week: some very fine fragments of glass (about 2mm thick), a leather tent panel...

...and most importantly, this beautiful Samian dish, stamped 'MICC...'. Andrew suspects that rubbish would have been periodically scoured out of the ditches and dumped in a big municipal rubbish heap (so far not found!). This dish would probably have been one of the last pieces of rubbish thrown in and is the first piece of datable evidence to be found for this feature. Yay! :D
