Very warm and very dry in the North Field - even the cattle were sweating (at least I think that's what was coming out of them). Too early to describe anything definitively. Some soil colour differences emerging, as well as bits of pottery and a nice glass bead. Stone structures were found last year near the stone wall, but the stones uncovered today appear jumbled. Unsettled weather forecast for the rest of the week.
Photos to follow with a few vicus pix.

Tuesday much cooler and light persistent rain fell from mid-afternoon. Midges particularly nasty and some of us resemble Ordnance Survey maps. Continued trowelling the soil levels, exposing the yellow and gray hues. The two clusters of stones were methodically delineated, for further consideration. A number of test trenches were commenced at the north end to ascertain any evidence of ditches. A few promising signs.
In t'other trench in the vicus area, further cleaning out operations continued. Nothing dramatic found (that I know of).
Photos shortly.

Harry - yes, the possible stone water tank is at the southern end of 4c.

As Justin advised above, incessant rain all day. Very informative lecture by Andrew this morning, followed by a walk around Barcombe Hill after lunch. A large number of intrepid souls were shown the Iron Age feature and the site of the Roman signal station. Surprisingly, the view from the monument wasn't too bad considering. Not exactly a gentle introduction to Vindolanda for the Canadian students, six lassies and two lads.
