From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

WiFi on site; How about adding it in the cafe?

WiFi access would be a very nice addition to the public areas of the site. I know it is available in the Hedley Centre, so it seems like it wouldn't be too challenging to extend access into the cafe.

To do so would obviously cost some money in set-up and maintenance, but it could also provide an additional source of income by charging for access. This could be by day (most likely for regular visitors) or by week to suit excavators pockets. I could easily imagine visitors being willing to pay 2 or 3 quid for a day, diggers perhaps 10 for the week. It could add up quickly into a tidy sum raised per year...

Andy, what do you think?

As I believe you can get free wi-fi at the Twicey and the Milecastle would it be reasonable for the Trust to charge? It shouldn't cost much to set up and I cannot see that there would be any maintenance costs. My B&B this year (not my usual one) Kellah Farm had fortunately just installed free wi-fi which was useful as I took my laptop with me to stay in touch with friends.

I think its fair to charge because its not actually free in the other places, the cost is accounted for in their overall price. Same goes for the Hedley, you're paying to stay there, its one of the many costs of running the centre. I know I would pay for access, I'm sure others would too (especially those coming from overseas for whom cellular data charges can be astronomical), there are plenty of places diggers are staying at that don't have wifi access.

If the Trust didn't want to go to the trouble of installing it and setting up an access system in the cafe, an option for diggers to use the existing Hedley access point would be a good/easy alternative. It would be great if they offered it for free (maybe they unofficially do already??), but I think its perfectly reasonable for them to charge some kind of fee for it.

Having bumped this up to the top, it would still be interesting to hear what the Trust's view is on the WiFi question.

Andy, any thoughts on whether the Trust might be able to provide wider access to the wireless network on site, either to diggers not staying at the Hedley, or more broadly to all visitors? For a fee or free?

Hi Andy,

Not sure if you saw this thread from last autumn. It was just before applications went live, so it wouldn't be surprising if you missed it. :P

Are diggers OK to use the existing wi-fi at the Hedley? If not, what do you think about charging a fee for access?
