I am not sure if I have the strength to report anything so it is just as well that there is little to report! De-turfing heading south (and east on the rampart so that there is now only a narrow barrow-run left twixt trench and wall). But first we all swapped trenches which did not please some people as they had spent last week getting down to archaeology and were moved to de-turf today. However, it will be down again tomorrow, hopefully and weather permitting. Today was so windy that a slight sprinkle of raindrops forced an early tea but no time lost otherwise.

Finds seem to have been minimal - the "staff of recognition" (the laser ranging pole) was seen mostly lying forlornly in the grass. Yours truly, however, did come up with an intact glass bottle complete with inscription: "Bell & Sons Ltd Liverpool"! A google gave many references to builders in that city but the one I prefer is to a "veterinary chemist" and they were in business in 1938 according to an invoice that was up for auction on e-bay.

I have the trench photos but not the strength to downsize them and post them - maybe tomorrow after breakfast. (Keep you on tenterhooks,eh!)

Edit: Just seen Justin's twitter photo showing, to the right, a newly de-turfed wall. I told Kate last week that she was standing on it!

The criss-crossed layer of walls in Justin's latest Twitter pic are amazing! As are the drains running through & under and around. Just so much archaeology!

What a smorgasbord - walls and floors running everywhere! Many thanks Nic. The trenches look amazing this year.

Briefly, very briefly as we are about to head off into the rain to find out what is in store for us today, yesterday morning was washed out and replaced by a couple of presentations by Andrew followed by a full afternoon of getting dirty deturfing, exposing walls, removing ramparts and finding the odd thing or two. Oh, and excavating an old excavation trench. End of day photos later.

Video blog of the altar is now up at Vindolanda's main blog site!

Very cool video, Anthony Birley gives a great description of the writing & its context. (And we were right about the Vot Ret L M being rare and kind of neat.)

Well - last day of digging in session 2 we amazingly managed to get just about a full days digging between sun, hail, snow and rain (photo attached of lunchtime snow from shelter of hut)

Fantastic to see the walls and floors coming up, and also the steps up to the rampart - east/west wall seems to go pretty much right up to rampart and beyond the area uncovered so far to the west. Lots of arrowheads and gaming counters coming up.

Good luck to all diggers next sessions, keep the photos coming if you have the strength/signal!

Thanks so much for the great updates & photos Fiona! Just a thing of beauty seeing all of that criss-crossed stonework there. (The snow may be a bit less beautiful, no offense to Mother Nature.)

Also, a great write-up of Week 4 posted to Vindolanda's blog: http://vindolanda.blogspot.com/2013/04/week-4-little-bit-of-interruption-from.html
