From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Welcome to We Dig Vindolanda!

Hi Harry, Pete and Tim,

many thanks for hosting WeDig, but everything runs its course. I know that not everyone does FB/Twit/et al, but at least those who don't now have the Vindolanda blog to help them keep up to date. Those of us who do may meet again on the other side.

Hi Peeps,

My tuppence...

I do like the Twitter feed and official Vindo-blog, but they don't really allow for volunteer interaction. I understand the Trust's keen-ness to keep control over what info runs free into the outside world (and I understand that there are very good reasons for this reticence) but people do like to chat. I know that WeDig isn't seeing so much traffic now, but perhaps thatís more a reflection of the medium than anything else. It has outlasted a number of internet revolutions, so it hasn't done too bad, but to everything, turn, turn, turn...

I do use FB and it would obviously be very easy to just set up an informal group in there. If that were to go ahead, it could be a limited group, requiring approval to join, but the limits would depend on how much involvement any admins want. More limits mean more intervention is required by admins. It could be fairly light touch though, and just post a sticky with guidelines for posting.

On the flip side, not everyone uses, or wants to use FB, or any other social media. I can't solve that one, unless we all write letters to one another :P

Hi Justine (and Claire *waves back*)

the FROG forum is a Ning network. As with any forum, it's only works if people use it, and the FROG network has taken some time to get going. It is going now though and I like it. It's very easy to add documents and photos, blogs, groups, discussions, all that.

There are some clunky things about it, like the fact that if anyone starts a discussion, it has to be approved by an Admin. I don't know if it's possible to just set it up so that no approval is needed, but in any case, it does need Admins, so it'll depend on whether people have the time and capacity to do that.

Something to think about.

^^ what she said, plus it is also linked in to a number of people's Facebook and Twitter feeds, so people who aren't on either of those can get to see at least some of the FB/Twitter activity.

The difference though, is that TDP actively encourages its volunteers to take ownership of outreach activities, whereas the Vindolanda Trust doesn't.

Personal blogs are entirely up to individuals, but a group blog, like the Fawkes Hall of Thames blog and the piece in the Greenwich Visitor, actually represent TDP activities. TDP is fine about that (delighted actually), would VT be?
