I got a minnkota 101 on my boat. I really like it. I had a motorguide on the previous boat and didn't really notice any difference besides the power. I wanted to know the difference between the 2 also. A lot of people told me to go with a minnkota because it's a quieter motor. Originally when I was shopping for my boat, I was going to get a 80lb. But when I looked at the price difference, I just paid the extra $100 more. If you compared the price difference between the 80lb and 101lb, there's not much of a difference in price. You would have to buy an extra battery and get another charger if you don't have an open bank on your current charger. It's worth the extra money to get more power. There were times when I really needed the power to get out of the tulles and weeds. The 101 motor just hacks right through everything. I would think a 101 would be more suited for your boat since you have a 20ft boat.

Minnkota. i have an old Motorguide on the side of my house collectin' dust. i've had the Minnkota for 4 years and have had to pull it out 4 times to clean off the weeds. with the Motorguide, i'd have to do that 4 times a day.

it hasn't been all good, as i've had a couple repairs along the way, but there's a guy in Dublin area that can fix in in a day or two in his garage. he also does warranty work, had good advice, and a nice collection of parts.

don't bother getting the transducer unit. it works nice but there's no temp guage on it.

jeeze, steve! 101?? i'm impressed!

The 101 was really useful on those windy days.

i watched that 101, 36 VDC drag John's ProCraft around the Holland Marina at the last tournament. HOLY SMOKES!! ya gotta be careful in the no-wake zones.

i don't have a problem with my 24VDC, but on windy days against the tide, it becomes a challenge. that's not very often & if need be i'll fish elsewhere. i'd like the larger motor, but i don't have the room for another battery and WILL NOT hook it up to my starter battery. the only thing i'll hook to my starter battery are my depth finders 'cause they have voltage monitors on 'em.

Britt,

We have a 70lb (min-kota) on our Stratus, and it does the job OK.
If the 80lb unit is still 24V, you should have no probelm.

I replaced my motorguide and had a 70lb minnkota on the old boat. It was sufficient in most conditions. But there were times when I needed something stronger when going against current and wind. It didn't do that good in the weeds though. You should come out on my boat and try out the 101. I think it would help you decide after trying it out.

motor guide and Minkota are both good motors.
The go pedal is on oppisite sides.
Unless you want to learn how to run the other I would stick with the brand you have.
Far as hacking through weeds, that all comes down to the prop on the motor.

More thrust is always better. Have room and the money to run 3 batteries? go for it.
Motor guide is USA made. (atleast last time I checked)
I have had both. The Minkota I have had to work on a few times. The switches for go and speed select seem crappy. Crappy enough I carry a spare on my boat.
