Every now and then, I have trouble missing fish on Beavers. It just seems like they don't get hooked. I usually use a Gammie EWG 3/0 on 20lb fluoro. Is anyone using a different type of hook? I've been reading on westernbass that some guys like the standard offset worm hooks, or the straight shank Reaction Innovations BMF hooks. Maybe I just need to set harder...But then, Gee would probably tell you that I'm already a little dangerous. ![]() |

Every now and then? I only seen you hook 10% of all your claimed bites. You need to upgrade those beavers to double wide. Don't be shy to use bigger beavers. I use double wide with 5/0 hooks and hook almost all of them. |

Double wide beavers would be the right size for the delta. You're still use to fishing the lakes. We have big fish that want big crawdads in the delta. |

Wow...I just wanted to know about hooks. What you guys do with big and smelly beavers on your own time is your own business. ![]() |

You guys aint' gonna like this 'cause you're all tied up in the Gami/Owner hype, but don't overlook Eagle Claw hooks. i've never missed a fish 'cause it's an Eagle Claw hook. Just make sure it's sharp. Eagle Claw has some extra-long shanks and their hook numbers don't seem to follow the standard set by other manufacturers and tend to run bigger. the #3.5 worm hook is long with a wide gap seems to be a great hook for hogs and senko's, though i still use Gami's for senko's. i have some extra-wide tubes that EC seems to have an answer for. when BPS opens they, or Fisherman's warehouse will be a good source. they're also about a tenth the price, leaving more $$ to fuel those long runs. |

gami, owner eagle claw they are all good i like to use the eagle claw for my d shot rig they seem to be thicker. + 1/2 the cost. as for the beavers your only gona catch males on the beav you need to throw a 10" big unit.

Okay - Throw big, smelly beavers on EC hooks...Unless I want to catch bigger fish, in that case - throw a 10" worm. Thanks guys. Now I'm really confused. ![]() I think I might try setting harder or throwing more braid.

Scott, they use the BFH hook with the standard shank for a reason. when the hook is tyed "correct" and use with a texas rig, it acts like a switch blade knife when you set hook. (so to speak) on hook set the hook snaps UP making it nearly impossible to miss a fish that has sucked up the bait. Steve H You are all so correct about the eagle claw hooks. There is nothing wrong with them if you know how to use a hook file. Some of the their hooks are dull out of the package. Eagle Claw hooks have been catching fish for many years before gammi was even though of. in fact I beilive that the harding prosses that gammi uses to make them so sharp cause the hook point to be britle. I often have to sharpen the gamikatsu hooks I pour for my jigs during a days fishing where as eagle claws seem to hold the point longer. Steve G double wide beavers are not the only way to catch big fish. The standard size beaver catches 10 poonders. Big bait is not always better. If you catching alot of fish on the small beaver, then step up to the bigger one. |

Thanks, Jim. i thought it was just me and the catfish guys supporting Eagle Claw here on the left coast. i'd still like to learn how to do jigs. it seems the one you buy is never really the one you want. the only way to get that one is to make it yourself. you still have my fly-tying clamp?? i could sure use it....... |

Thanks Jim. I think I'll give some of those BMF hooks a try...and will compare them w/ some EC's when BPS opens up. I steer clear of Owners now because of brittleness issues - haven't seen it w/ Gammies, but it makes sense. You can only abuse metal so much. I ordered a pack of those BMF barbs to see if they help keeping the baits on(had trouble before w/ straight shanks - lures kept falling off). Even if they work, I won't order them again - they're just heat-shrink tubing with one side cut into a point with scissors. Hello Lowes. |

Brittyn does not need to throw finese baits, since his back seater is to put a limit in the boat, while 4 or 5 hours goes by & no fish in the boat from the Big baits. His finese fishing consits of burning a lipless crankbait, & slow presentation of any top water bait. I think if we get cooling temps this week they reaction bite could be excellent. If so be sure to have your lucky crafts tied on. |

Thanks! it's getting to be that season. i need to tie some weedless drop shot hooks and some weedless stuff for wacky-rigged senkos. also good for tying feather tails for rip baits, spooks, etc. those feathered little hooks don't always cut it. |

The BMF hooks and barbs worked pretty well. I was flipping both a 1/4 oz on fluoro and a 1oz tungsten set-up on braid and didn't have any lures shredded by the grass/tulles. And the one confused fish that didn't get the "we're not eating beavers anymore memo" didn't come unbuttoned. |
