Playing career

Hodgson debuted at Western Suburbs Magpies at wing where his performances during the 1999 NRL season belied the club's ordinary season. He has previously played for the Parramatta Eels. Hodgson is a light-weight player by rugby league standards. He is currently the captain of the Wests Tigers and played in their grandfinal-winning side in 2005. He was the Wests Tigers captain from 2006 - 2008.

He has signed a two year deal to play in the UK for the Huddersfield Giants for seasons from 2009.

Season-ending injuries

In 2003, Hodgson's final year at Parramatta was cut short in round 16 with a rib injury.

On July 23, 2006, midway through the first half of the clash between Wests Tigers and his former club, Parramatta Eels, Hodgson sustained medial and cruciate ligament injuries and was sidelined for the remainder of the season.

In Round 12, 2007, Hodgson fractured his cheekbone in the match against Parramatta. After surgery to repair the fracture, Hodgson was sidelined for seven rounds and returned in Round 20 for his 200th first-grade game, a resounding win against the North Queensland Cowboys.

Career highlights

* First Grade Debut: Round 11, Wests v South Queensland at Campbelltown Stadium, May 18, 1997
* First Grade Record: 204 appearances scoring 85 tries, 400 goals and 1 field goal (Total: 1141 points) (current at end 2007 season)
* Premierships: 2005 (West Tigers v North Queensland Cowboys)

Representative games

* City Origin: 2001, 2002, 2004–2006, 2008
* State Of Origin: Six games for New South Wales in 2002, 2006 (1 try, 5 goals, Total: 14 points)

Records

He was the leading point scorer in the National Rugby League competition in 2005 scoring 308 points. This stands as the most ever points scored by a fullback in a single National Rugby League season.

WAR HORSE - Brett Hodgson - Wests Tigers
NRL.com

HE has won premierships, played State of Origin and surpassed the 200-game mark but rarely has Brett Hodgson felt the pressure as much as right now.

Two ordinary seasons following their 2005 premiership success have put the spotlight directly on Wests Tigers’ senior players’ group – of which Hodgson leads the way – but even more pressing is the captain’s future amid rumours he was set to head to England in 2009.

“It’s been very distracting and I didn’t like it being spoken about all the time last year,” Hodgson, 30, explains.

“I prefer things like that to be dealt with as quietly as possible so it was a bit frustrating in that regard but that’s all part of it I guess.

“Hopefully I can have a good start to the season – a good first five or six rounds – and whatever happens with the contract negotiations happens.

“I’m pretty much playing for my future because I haven’t got anything beyond next year.”
It’s been a difficult time for Hodgson.

The former Parramatta fullback was on a high in mid-2006 when he was recalled to the NSW State of Origin squad just eight months after winning his maiden premiership with the Tigers.

But a serious knee injury against his former club in round 20 ended his season early and contributed to the side missing the finals.

It was the first of two years running in which the Tigers have failed to feature in September, including Hodgson’s first as captain in 2007.

“It’s disappointing… frustrating – it’s been unforgivable really to have success and then let ourselves go like we have,” he says.

“I was pretty disappointed with how we finished off last year – we lost four of our last five games when we were sitting in a pretty good position.

“Hopefully we can learn from that, the kids coming through can get that experience and try and bit more effective this year.”

If anything, though, the setbacks have only made Hodgson more determined.

He describes the current pre-season as the best in years – both personally and as a club – and predicts a return to the finals as imminent in 2008.

“It’s been very intense this year – there’s been a lot more physical tackling and things like that so everyone is pretty excited about where it’s heading,” he says.

“That’s where we all knew we let ourselves down – in the defensive side last year – so that’s the key for us at this stage.”

“Obviously everyone would say that they’ve had a great off-season at this time of year but it’s about starting the season off well.

“Last year we lost our first five or six games in a row and we were always on the back foot.
“That won’t happen again this season.”

What are your own goals this season?
“I want to play representative football again but that comes from starting the season off well.

I’ve got to make sure that I do have a good start.

I’ve done the best possible preparation for it in the pre-season. I’m excited and I’m confident that I can play some good football.”

Is there more responsibility on you this season?
“Yeah and I want to become a better leader. I don’t like to use the word veteran – I prefer senior player – but we have got a very young side, there is no doubt about that, and some of the older guys have to step up and lead the way this year.

I’m looking at myself to be one of those guys that can lead the way and hopefully we can provide a bit of direction for the young kids.”

What do you do in your spare time?
“Ninety-nine days out of 100 I’m just at home with the kids, I spend time with them and give my wife a rest.

I also enjoy playing golf with the boys as well. The kids are no.1 so I try and spend as much time with them as possible.”

Do you have any hobbies?
“I used to play guitar but I gave them up after I could play eight chords. I was over the moon when I got to that stage! Other than that, just my golf really.”

What other sports do you enjoy?
“I watch a bit of cricket. I didn’t get too into it this year but I do enjoy watching it. I also watch some Super 14 during the season.”

What does life after rugby league hold for Brett Hodgson?
“I’m trying to pursue all of those avenues at the moment – doing some coaching courses. I’ve got a sports marketing degree so it could be something in that avenue.

We’ll see where it heads but I think I’d like to keep a connection with football.”
