Sensational debut for `Mighty Mouse'

JOSH ALSTON

April 5th, 2010

WATCHING Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston's combination with fullback Matt Bowen was one of the main reasons former Tigers custodian Shannon Gallant wanted to come to North Queensland.

Now, despite showing plenty of hot form in his Cowboys debut on Saturday night, he is ready to hand the jersey back.

Bowen is expected to return to working with the team this week and could be a chance of returning to action for the round seven clash against the Eels.

When that happens, Gallant is ready to stand aside to let the master do his work.

''You can't be whingeing when you've got a guy like Matty Bowen coming back into the team,'' he said.

''I'll be happy to (give up the fullback jersey).

''Mango's going to add a lot to this team and it can only go forward.''

Gallant made an immediate impact on Saturday against the Titans, zipping his way up-field for 194 metres, having a hand in two tries and reeling in a William Zillman chip that would have been a certain try had he not got to it.

Following the 32-18 rout, he credited the way Thurston uses his fullback for helping him slot right into the action.

''He had a lot to do with me coming up here,'' Gallant said.

''His style of game suits me, Johnno uses his fullback as we've seen with him using Bowen, that's what I sort of like.

''He's a great talker, he's everywhere, he really helped me out with my footy.''

''Benji (Marshall) was the same.''

Ty Williams is expected to overcome his ankle and biceps complaints and be available for selection next week, but after his scintillating performance Gallant is expected to hold him out.

That would mean a dream match-up against his former club, with the Cowboys to take on the Tigers on Saturday night at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

But Gallant is taking nothing for granted and is just keen to put his best foot forward in training to keep his name in the mix.

''I need to repay the favour of a fulltime contract and I haven't done that yet,'' he said.

''I've got a long time up here so I'm just going to take it week-by-week and hopefully do my job well.

''It would be nice, but I'm not going to get too far ahead of myself.

''First I've got to get picked in the team and then I've got to go out and there and play well, not try to play too hard.''

If he is selected, Gallant is ready for the inevitable barbs that will come from his former teammates but said he was confident it wouldn't distract him.

''If I'm to play, a bit of niggling. It's all been done before,'' he said.

''If I get to play I'm going to try to not get too far ahead of myself and play my natural game and hopefully come out with another win like this.''
