Isaac De Gois Rugby League Newcastle Knights Not many players make their international debut before they play first grade. Then there's Isaac de Gois. The Wests Tigers utility played for Portugal as a 20-year-old while still plying his trade with Western Suburbs in Premier League. Another player to come off the famed Wests production line, de Gois didn't have to wait long to make his first grade debut, turning out against the New Zealand Warriors earlier this year as a replacement for hooker Robbie Farah. He handled himself with aplomb, showing the versatility and toughness which had him crowned SG Ball player of the year in 2002 and Premier League player of the year in 2005. It was those performances in lower grades - where he was a teammate of Liam Fulton, Bryce Gibbs and Dean Collis in the all-conquering Wests SG Ball side - which had de Gois earmarked for bigger things by Tigers coach Tim Sheens and his staff. He topped his debut against the Warriors by crossing for the first try in the NRL against North Queensland - a week after playing a role in a win over Melbourne. Capable of playing hooker, lock or five-eighth, de Gois' versatility and toughness caught the eye of Cronulla coach Ricky Stuart and he made the move to the Sharks this season, becoming an important part of the first grade squad. |

He plays for the Newcastle Knights, in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition. De Gois primarily plays at hooker. [1][2] Playing career Isaac De Gois is a Wests junior from the Liverpool area. He attended All Saint Catholic Senior in Liverpool. De Gois made his international debut before his first-grade debut. He was selected to play for Portugal against Fiji A in October, 2005, along-side his two brothers.[3] In 2006, De Gois made his first grade debut playing for the Wests Tigers in round 3 against the New Zealand Warriors, but made only 4 other appearances for the rest of the season, due to the form of regular hooker Robbie Farah. De Gois joined the Cronulla Sharks in 2007. He stayed with the Sharks for two seasons, never missing a game.[4] He scored 10 tries in his 50 games, scoring at a rate of one try per five games. De Gois passing the ball in 2009 In April 2008, De Gois announced that he would be playing with the Newcastle Knights from 2009 onwards, signing a deal to keep him at the club until 2011 under the guidance of coach Brian Smith, and as an immediate replacement to the departing Danny Buderus. De Gois established himself as a worthy replacement of Buderus, and was one of the top tacklers of 2009. He was a vital player in the Knights fairly successful 2009 season. In the last game of the regular season, De Gois injured his left knee, and left the field in the second half.[5] Despite doubts over his fitness, he was named to play in the qualifying final against Canterbury the next week, and re-injured his knee in the first minute of play.[6] |
