As with the JV, I reckon Wests and Balmain are the only two clubs who could make something like this work.

Balmain Press Release

PRESS RELEASE

MAJOR COMMUNITY EVENT
BALMAIN TIGERS VS WESTS AT BIRCHGROVE OVAL
SUNDAY 20th APRIL 2008

Balmain Tigers have announced that a Special Community Event will take place at Birchgrove Oval on Sunday 20th April 2008 that will serve to commemorate the Centenary of the first ever NSWRL Premiership match.

On 20th April 1908, Foundation Clubs, Balmain and Wests played the inaugural First Grade Rugby League match in Australia at Birchgrove Oval.  In an effort to relive history in this Centenary year of Rugby League, the Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers will take on the Wests Magpies for Round 6 of the NSW State Cup.

At the conclusion of the medal and trophy presentations, the match balls will be handed to the oldest living player from Balmain, Sid Ryan and the oldest living Wests player, Bill Keato for the start of the Wests Tigers Ball Relay to the Sydney Cricket Ground.

In “Olympic Relay” style fashion these match balls will be passed over twelve legs by some 100+ rugby league greats via countless historical sites reaching the SCG in time for the kick off between Wests Tigers and South Sydney.

These same balls will be used in the NRL match from 3.00pm, further linking the history of the game to the founding Clubs of Rugby League.

The event which will be the platform for the start of the Wests Tigers Ball Relay will commence at Birchgrove Oval at 9.00am with kids activities, face painting, jumping castle, and merchandise.

The game between Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers and the Wests Magpies for Round 6 of the NSW State Cup will kick off at 10.00am.  The Wests Tigers Ball Relay will commence at Midday.

In attendance will be some of the members of the Balmain Tigers Ambassadors Club like Keith Barnes, Larry Corowa, Benny Elias, Mark O’Neill, Sid Ryan,
Darren Senter, Paul Sironen & Wayne Pearce as well as some well known Magpie greats.

This is a family friendly community event of which everyone is welcome to celebrate history.

For more information about the Tigers Centenary, please contact the Centenary Office on 9556 0470.

Cheers Ink. Would have been nice to see more present day Magpie players involved too. Here's hoping that show up to the Black & White Ball at least.

Its a bit of a shame more of the lads from the 90's don't make appearances to Magpie events.

It is a shame indeed mate. A fortnight ago, the Bulldogs managed to get former Wests greats in Lamb, Farrar, Gillespe, Langmack to their 20th '88 Grand Final Anniversary. Yes, they all played for Canterbury, but they also played for Western Suburbs as well.

Are players like the above considered, contacted or asked about being involved or more so invited to attend/participate in Magpie/Wests Tigers events? Especially in what is our Centenary year.

I mean look at the players that are still involved with the club. Andrew Leeds, Cherry Mescia, Andrew Willis, Harvey Howard are worthy of the status as a 'Magpie Great'.

Balmain are involving more modern players in Pearce, Siro, Buckets, Hollywood etc. I think that's fantastic for the younger generation of Balmain and Wests Tigers fans. Not disrespect to the older players from past era's, from my perspective i'd be rallying players from ALL ERA'S not just several.

As i said, i hope all and as many past players are invited and urged to attend the upcoming Black & White Ball dinner and Pratten Park Gala Centenary Day, two specific events that are honouring this football club in it's Centenary Year as a prestigous Foundation Club.

True gobbs, you see em at re unions, names like Bruiser clark, Sloth Gibbs, Mick L etc etc, why arent they and players liek kenny mac, TC, Russell Mullins, Tom Arbor, Mick neil, Lidden, bell etc etc etc, ever invited to anything?

Is it becuase of the move?

I get so jealous, being involved in balmain jnrs, it seems everyones dad, their dads dad and his dad too played, its tight, very tight knit and the sense of history is enormous, hard to keep that when you move, then move again, then again, and then once more very very far away.

Kenny, Buddha, Ronnie Jones, Chris Yates, Darren Willis all still reside in the Campbelltown-Macarthur region. Were all proud men pulling on the Black and White, get them involved. Bustling Billy Dunn, Aseri Laing, Brandon Costin (Pearson) are still running around and have some contribution with the QLD Cup, another few men that gave 110% whilst playing for Western Suburbs.

Have they and other past players from all era's been invited to the Black & White Ball and Pratten Park Gala Day? Do they even know about it? Heck if I was a former player, i'd want to know and be invited.

I'd love nothing more than to see more and more players contacted, invited and involved with events, re-unions, heck, get them in to educate the players, share their experiences with the Harold Matthews right up to the NSW Cup, even U20's and NRL sides if need be.

We've got the history and tradition. How about using it via the past players from all era's, not just a segment. It could only be a beneficial and positive step from where i'm standing. It would really go to show the bond and spirit is well and truly alive within the Magpies Club.

I hope everyone that attends has a great time and the result is reversed from 1908.

Unfortunatley, I will be unable ti attend. My son is getting christened on that day. So there are two special celebrations on that day.

I went through the agonising Pre 2005 ceremony that required one to attend 500 losses and try to remain hopefull that one day we will win a Premiership.
