On The Sunday Roast, Paul Langmack said that he was taking part in the relay, so hopefully other more “recent” former players will be involved, too.

Can’t wait. Hope the weather treats us kindly, too!!

That's fantatic news DA. Langers was a long and loyal servant of the Black and White who stuck solid with the Maggies whilst others left for apparent greener pastures, he battled on and lead the club through the 90's with his strong captaincy, expereince and leadership. From memory, he was the Dally M Captain of the year in 1995.

It's good and more so refreshing to see a modern Magpie great involved. Let's hope this is just the beginning as the club should be aspiring to get as many former club men from the more modern day era's involved in all capacities.

LEAGUE GREATS IN WESTS TIGERS BALL RELAY
LEGEND....Keith Barnes in his glory days.

Former NRL CEO Neil Whittaker will join rugby league legends Bill Keato, Noel Kelly, Keith Barnes, Arthur Beetson, John Dorahy and Paul Sironen on the greatest rugby league relay in the history of the game.

Wests Tigers will stage a Ball Relay on Sunday, April 20, that will capture the imagination of the rugby league public. Supporters are encouraged to line the streets to cheer on the participants.

The Wests Tigers Ball Relay will see the match balls used in the NSW State Cup game between Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies at Birchgrove Oval relayed to the Sydney Cricket Ground in ‘Olympic’ style fashion for the kick-off between Wests Tigers versus South Sydney clash at 3pm.

On April 20, 1908, Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies at Birchgrove Oval with the Tigers winning 24-0.

One hundred years to the day, Balmain and Western Suburbs will do battle at the historic ground in the NSW State Cup from 10am.

Following full-time, players from the game will hand over the official match ball to the oldest living Wests player, Bill Keato, and Balmain Tigers life member Hilton Kidd.

The ball will then be passed onto Balmain and Wests legends from the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

The Ball Relay will take in some of rugby league’s most historical sites including Darling Street, just hundreds of metres from where two of rugby league’s greatest names lived at East Balmain.
As the relay runners head along Darling Street, they will pass Duke Street, where the house once stood of rugby league’s first superstar Dally Messenger. Running off Duke Street is Duke Place where Balmain rugby league legend Wayne Pearce spent his early years.

After winding its way through the streets of Balmain, the relay will travel across Sydney Harbour aboard the Dawn Fraser River Cat, under the Harbour Bridge, pass the Opera house, and through the heart of the city to the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Recognising the past, present and future of rugby league, the relay will include 12 legs, featuring representatives from foundation clubs – Norths, Souths, Newtown, and Newcastle - as well as celebrities who support rugby league, community members, junior league representatives and supporters.

Women will also be recognised for their significant contribution to the game with the NRL’s Harvey Norman Women in League carrying the ball during a leg of the historic relay.

The relay will culminate with a surprise ending prior to the NRL First Grade kick off at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Kenny, Buddha, Ronnie Jones, Chris Yates, Darren Willis all still reside in the Campbelltown-Macarthur region. Were all proud men pulling on the Black and White, get them involved. Bustling Billy Dunn, Aseri Laing, Brandon Costin (Pearson) are still running around and have some contribution with the QLD Cup, another few men that gave 110% whilst playing for Western Suburbs.

Have they and other past players from all era's been invited to the Black & White Ball and Pratten Park Gala Day? Do they even know about it? Heck if I was a former player, i'd want to know and be invited.

I'd love nothing more than to see more and more players contacted, invited and involved with events, re-unions, heck, get them in to educate the players, share their experiences with the Harold Matthews right up to the NSW Cup, even U20's and NRL sides if need be.

We've got the history and tradition. How about using it via the past players from all era's, not just a segment. It could only be a beneficial and positive step from where i'm standing. It would really go to show the bond and spirit is well and truly alive within the Magpies Club.

There was an advertisment in Big League calling all ex NRL players from Wests/Balmain/Wests Tigers to contact the club to be a part of the festivities.

I was meant to tell Kenny Mac about it, but didnt really get the chance and besides I think he prefers to lay low in regards to RL these days. Would of been great to have as many players there as possible tho.

I'll be there tomorrow, transport is proving a nightmare though as there is only 5 buses all day from my area into Liverpool and I don't want to drive.. so I may arrive late. Hopefully the weather holds up ok and we all have a terrific proud day there and a great entertaining match.

Balmain Press Release

PRESS RELEASE

MAJOR COMMUNITY EVENT
BALMAIN TIGERS VS WESTS AT BIRCHGROVE OVAL
SUNDAY 20th APRIL 2008

Balmain Tigers have announced that a Special Community Event will take place at Birchgrove Oval on Sunday 20th April 2008 that will serve to commemorate the Centenary of the first ever NSWRL Premiership match.

On 20th April 1908, Foundation Clubs, Balmain and Wests played the inaugural First Grade Rugby League match in Australia at Birchgrove Oval.  In an effort to relive history in this Centenary year of Rugby League, the Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers will take on the Wests Magpies for Round 6 of the NSW State Cup.

At the conclusion of the medal and trophy presentations, the match balls will be handed to the oldest living player from Balmain, Sid Ryan and the oldest living Wests player, Bill Keato for the start of the Wests Tigers Ball Relay to the Sydney Cricket Ground.

In “Olympic Relay” style fashion these match balls will be passed over twelve legs by some 100+ rugby league greats via countless historical sites reaching the SCG in time for the kick off between Wests Tigers and South Sydney.

These same balls will be used in the NRL match from 3.00pm, further linking the history of the game to the founding Clubs of Rugby League.

The event which will be the platform for the start of the Wests Tigers Ball Relay will commence at Birchgrove Oval at 9.00am with kids activities, face painting, jumping castle, and merchandise.

The game between Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers and the Wests Magpies for Round 6 of the NSW State Cup will kick off at 10.00am.  The Wests Tigers Ball Relay will commence at Midday.

In attendance will be some of the members of the Balmain Tigers Ambassadors Club like Keith Barnes, Larry Corowa, Benny Elias, Mark O’Neill, Sid Ryan,
Darren Senter, Paul Sironen & Wayne Pearce as well as some well known Magpie greats.

This is a family friendly community event of which everyone is welcome to celebrate history.

For more information about the Tigers Centenary, please contact the Centenary Office on 9556 0470.

The press release is wrong because while wests v balmain was the 'main event', the first actual first grade game was at 2.15pm- Norths v Souths as it was part 1 of the double header, i mean obviously we were the main event :D but they had to give us time to get the ferry back to the otherside!
