A bloke named Kevin McGuinness is the centre and captain of Wollongong Western Suburbs first grade team in the Illawarra Carlton League, according to a recent Illawarra Mercury article.

I assume this is our beloved Buddha?

Indeed it is the one and only Buddha.

He finished up in tenure over in the old dart at the end of last year with Salford in the English Super League and came home looking for a start with Wests Tigers or another NRL Club. There was no real interest and then was asked by Wests Wollongong to pull on the boots for them, with no other offers he opted to do so and has been carving up sides with his ability.

Wouldn't Leo and the NSW Cup team love a bloke of his ability right about now. He's still too good to be playing in that League down in the Gong. I'd much rather see him leading the Maggies and i'd bet my bottom dollar it would be long before Coach Sheens would have to call upon him for his services either.

Do the players in the Illawarra Competition get paid more than the average State Cup player at Wests ?

Two Eyed Craig. Buddha always played well in Black & White ;) Would love to see him and a few of the Wollongong based players like Keiran Kerr for instance playing for the Maggies in the NSW Cup and contributing and helping other players at the club and coming through the ranks. They're not washed up and are still in great form.

Kerr was WT best HB option at one stage. Certainly wouldn't mind seeing he and Buddha back. The worst that could happen would be being sent back to where they are now...

Funny that the club has just signed Gray Viane who was coincidently Buddha's outside man on the wing last year at Salford City Reds in the English Super League.

The pair had a lethal centre-wing combo, i'm lucky enough to have recorded a game against Huddersfield where the two went to town on the John Skandalis Huddersfield team ;)

If the opportunity arose and Buddha was approached, i'd dare say he'd pull on the Black and White in next to no time at all. He loves the joint and loves Campbelltown.

Get him on the phone brother! This is the Maggies, if he's that keen... get him banging the door down.

I'm pretty sure this Football Club would have to approach McGuinness and Wests Wollongong first and foremost if he was to return and play for Western Suburbs in the NSW Cup. It's something I'd love to see happen too AJ.

With Gravy coming back, his history and experience with the club is a tremendous boost. But an acquisition in the form and talent of Buddha would be massive, his experience, wisdom and guidence would be so beneficial and his ability to play as a Centre, 5/8th, Halfback and if need be Hooker would he'd bring a great amount of depth and utility value with him.

I'm unaware of his status and contract with Wests Wollongong, but as i said, if he was approached i'm sure it would be something he'd definitely consider, being a local boy and more so that now his partner in crime from the English Super League is back helping out the Maggies.

Wests don't need all these old players, they are a club moving forward into the future with new young talent from Ctown.. all these past players that have been 'let go' or just been punted are not needed ..look at our position on the ladder.

But with young new talent comes uncharted territory, ill discipline, inexperience and unsettled football which the young NSW Cup players have been guilty of for many a season now. Success comes with the right mix and blend of youth and experience. You can possess all the talent in the world within your ranks, but if you don't have the expereince and blokes that have been there and done the job before, you're going to suffer. I'm not saying give ex-pats of the Western Suburbs Magpies club, long term contracts, but offer them the chance to come back, and help build up and develop the next generation. I mean let's face it, we don't have the luxury of training and utilisng the facilities at Concord, nor do players get to rub shoulders with the NRL and U/20's players all that often. That in itself brings about professionalism and a sense of belief confidence and enthusiasm.

Perhaps old Magpies like McGuinnes or Gray Viane who has infact returned to the club could be exactly what Western Suburbs needs. It's not about flooding our NSW Cup team with old heads and used by date's, but more so, experience, development and passing on knowledge from one Magpie generation to the next.

I for one would much rather see a local lad, a product from the junior nursery, former player and favourite son providing his service of talent and experience with the Wests Magpies in the NSW Cup than Wests Wollongong in the Illawarran Carlton League. All you have to do is look at the QLD Cup competition and see that 'Age Does Not Weary Them' what-so-ever, and the standard of the game up north is at a tremendous level with many an older generation player still running around and pulling on the boot helping/assisting the younger kids coming through who are aspiring to play NRL, the same way hopefully our Magpie kids are wanting to pull on a Wests Tigers jersey.
