Shannon Gallant was instrumental in the Magpies win on Saturday, deft with his hands and accurate with his boot.

EXACTLY 100 years to the day last Sunday, Western Suburbs Magpies again eyeballed Balmain Tigers in a game of rugby league at Birchgrove Oval.

On April 20, 1908, the two foundation clubs of the newly formed NSW Rugby League kicked off the first game of the inaugural competition. That day Balmain proved the stronger and humbled Wests 24-0.

In the 2008 replay the Magpies, although playing in the secondary competition now, proudly rewrote the history books by outplaying their Tiger foes.

Fans from both sides of the NRL joint venture partners braved showers all day to be part of the historic occasion at Birchgrove Oval.

Those sporting black and white jerseys cheered the loudest at the end of the day after the Magpies claimed a 36-24 victory in the centenary rematch.

Magpies general manager Kevin Hammond said Wests immortal Noel Kelly, last week named in the NRL team of the century, presented the players with 1908 replica jerseys and told them to wear them with pride.

"The Magpies have now squared the ledger with one win apiece and have written themselves in the pages of history," he said.

"Unfortunately we will have to wait another 100 years for the decider."

Hammond recounted the words of one Magpies diehard on the day: "Balmain hasn't improved that much over 100 years. They scored 24 points in 1908 and they could only manage 24 points 100 years later."

In other games, the Magpies Harold Matthews team secured their fifth win on the trot with a 52-4 effort over Canberra. The SG Ball boys lost 26-24 to Canberra.

Great comment Kevin

If this is what it is like when we win a game "during the season" (I know it was a very important game), what is it going to be like when we win the big one at the end of the season????!!!!!

I might have to make another trip over there to join in the celebrations.

'Pies avenge history

THE Western Suburbs Magpies returned to Birchgrove Oval on Sunday morning, exactly 100 years to the day when the first game in the newly formed NSW Rugby League matched Wests against Balmain.

This match was part of the Centenary of Rugby League celebrations and wrote itself into the glorious history of the game and the clubs as the first chapter of the next century.

The day dawned overcast with showers dampening prospects of a good crowd but the significance of the event brought out a healthy contingent of supporters to watch the re-enactment of the first match of 1908 when Balmain beat the 'Pies 24-nil.

The Magpies had worked hard throughout the week and had been reminded often about the importance of the occasion.

They took to the field wearing 1908 replica jersey, shorts and socks presented by Wests immortal Noel Kelly who, only three nights before, has been named hooker in the Rugby League Team of the Century.

In their pristine black-and-white livery sponsored by Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, Rebel Sport and Delonghi Electrical Appliances the Magpies ran onto the waterfront field and, after the national anthem, got down to business early with bone-jarring, inspired defence.

Despite much possession, the Tigers were unable to breach the Magpies who, in the 15th minute, swooped in for a try by centre Bea Ryan whose run beat several defenders. Fullback Shannon Gallant added the extras.

The Magpies withstood all the pressure the Tigers could exert and Gallant got a penalty goal in the 22nd minute before lock forward Rocky Trimachi scored, leaving Balmain defenders in his wake. Again Gallant added the extras.

The Tigers hit back in the 34th minute with a converted try but forward Daine Laurie crossed beneath the posts on half-time and again converted (Magpies 20-6).

The buoyed Magpies were keen to finish what they had started and Trent Cutler scored a fine try just two minutes into the second half.

The score flattered the Tigers who were completely outplayed and the victory was sweet revenge for the 1908 loss.

The players were presented with commemorative medallions and captain Nathan Waters accepted the inaugural Birchgrove Oval Centenary Trophy from state MP Verity Firth in front of an appreciative crowd.

NRL CEO David Gallop and NSWRL and ARL GM Geoff Carr also witnessed the history in the making.

If anyone should be wondering why they still support the Maggies in 2008, just being at Birchgrove Oval and seeing so many friends and heroes from years gone by was enough to convince them.

What a great day.

What a great win.

And by the way, it also reminded me why Balmain was my second team. Their supporters around me and my son were great fun, and the good-natured banter between us was great fun.

Well done, boys!!

Well said mate. The banter between the clubs was friendly.

Though had to laugh at the bloke who was cheering Suiciders when the Balmainiacs on the hill were cheering "Watersiders". Gold ! :D

I hope this could be a yearly event at Birchgrove. If marketed the same there is no reason a crowd close to the Centenary clash could not be achieved.
