Despite our less than impressive effort in the first half I thought today was a fantastic day for the Wests Magpies. Sometimes when it's that wet and the ground is so wet teams will just get beat not matter what the effort or desire so I'm not really worried about the game from the boys today. The last six weeks of football should not be forgotten because of one bad week. So heads up boys and get em next week. We all know you can. I really hope that somehow we can take a game of football there every year. Wests Ashfield kick in all this money so why not give them and the Pratten Park Magpies a game a year. As somebody who's family has been in Ashfield for 100 years it was quite simply brilliant. A dry day and another 1000 people would of had the joint jumping beyond belief. I realise league will probabaly(?) never be a viable alternative in Ashfield again, but at least one game a year would be fantastic. At the very least could we take our home game against Newtown there to cash in on the work they do without giving away home ground advantage? I realise this is not such an easy thing with the ground being used for soccer and such but it woud be fantastic. Am I alone or did everyone else just feel the history of Wests pouring thru the streets of Ashfield from the club to the ground today? And to be able to go back and drink at the club that gives us all the money after the game was fantastic too. Shame the NRL Manly Easts game wasn't a nil all draw, just to top it off. Im old enough to remember the games we took there in '77 and '85 but would of loved to have felt somehow 6,000 jammed in there in the 50'/60's |

Congratulations Wests for organising that day yesterday. I had a great time and I was impressed with the effort that went in. A credit to all involved. Shame the scoreline and the weather didn't work out for you guys buit it was good to see the gluepot. A great setup yesterday. Food was good, beer was cold, there was a Mr Whippy van, people were friendly and you had a great display of merchandise (not that I bought any of the latter). Though Campbelltown is your home these days there are many Wests fans remaining in the Inner West. Taking one game each year to the inner west (alternating between Ashfield and Lidcombe perhaps) may be a good publicity vehicle for the club whilst still reinforcing Campbelltown as your home. I only hope yesterday can get many people to realise the positives of NSW Cup and return to watching tribal Sydney RL. See you guys in two weeks. |

Well done to everyone involved in organising the day. Although the result wasn't what we all hoped for it was a great day. Even the weather reminded me of the olden times sitting in the rain at Lidcombe Oval. Although I wasn't old enough to see the Maggies play at Pratten you could just sense the history as you walked through the gates. It sounds crazy but the atmosphere reminded me of my favourite movie "Field of Dreams" and the way they described how people will come to remind them of olden times. I took my son and my best mate who hadn't seen a Magpies game since the whole Wests Tigers thing happened and they both loved the day, my mate even bought a cap cause he loved mine so much. I agree, we should play another game there every year, and maybe even convince Auburn Council to let us have one at Lidcombe Oval as well. And I finally got to buy my 2008 jersey...thanks Andrew...I'm excited!!! |

Speaking of jerseys, those hooped jerseys you've been wearing at the Centenary games are sensational. |

Despite being stuck in the merchandise tent all day (and the result) I had a great day. It was fantastic to see the response to the day despite the problems with the weather. I was only able to sneak out to have a look a couple of times, but it looked like maybe 1500 people or so (anyone else do a count?). The question though is would the people who showed up for a one off special event like yesterday come in the same numbers every second week? The atmosphere at Birchgrove and Pratten show what this competition could be like. I think there is a market for old school footy like we enjoyed yesterday (maybe minus the mud?). Am I right or wrong? |

How much more old school can you get - a huge gluepot in the middle of the field? I hope this can be an annual event as it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Good to see more of our former 80's players (Trevor & John Cogger, Brett Clark, Ian Freeman, Allan Fallah, Brett Davidson, Mick Pinkerton, Matt Carter, Terry Donnellan, Dave Gallagher & Peter Vale) involved and it certainly brought back memories. The organisers certainly deserve a pat on the back. |

So it was you at the merchandise stall. I can finally put a face to the name. I estimated 1200. Looked really good at half time to see the crowd whren I walked over to the scoreboard. There definitley is a market for this as the Birchgrove/Pratten games and Newtown have shown. It takles a lot of hard work. A lot of effort went into the Birchgrove and Pratten games. Lots of advertising etc. It's probably not sustainable with the current budgets of NSW Cup clubs but if we keep having more "one off" events like this it will get people back to the games in other weeks. Unfortunately - whether because of the weak PA or otherwise - I didn't hear the Wests v Newtown home game in a fortnight being publicised yesterday. That would'bve been great. May have encouraged some people to return. I don't want to take away from yesterday. It was a great event and a sign of what the competition could be on a regular basis. |

Well done to all those that helped organise the event. I won't say to much about the teams performance as I wasn't really impressed. To many errors, dropped balls and missed tackles. Thats all. Does anyone know who scored the last two tries for the Magpies ? |

Just home after a great weekend. 2 great results Sat. night despite the disappomting crowd and a fantastic day yesterday despite the score. Well done to the maggies c'ttee you should be proud of what you put on yesterday. I also would love to attend a game a year at Pratten. Top shelf. And to Andrew, well done champ. Merchandise tent all night Sat. even had to ask if Beau Ryan played and then follow up yesterday. Top effort mate. |

Sunday was my first trip to Pratten Park and ala Birchgrove, the history just consumed me. Casting an eye around the ground, the hallowed turf, the Grandstand, the entrance and residential streets and old inner west suburb, it was a blast. Old school Nostalgia at it's best. Shame however there was only a small gathering of Balmain and Western Suburbs fans who reciprocated banter and more so respect. the weather and lack of promotion probably contributed to such a minor turnout, but hopefully word of mouth for future gatherings can see a greater number of attendee's in the future. I echo the sentiments of others calling for a Return to Pratten and more so Lidcombe next year. We owe it to Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, and would much rather see NSW Cup games played at Ashfield and Lidcombe than Concord Oval. Was great to see Wests Tigers Officials out there yesterday aswell. McDonnell and Sheens were watching both teams and players. Hopefully the form of Gallant, Vlaciky and Big Daine Laurie caught the eye of Coach Sheens, as i know the big unit is aiming at securing an opportunity with Wests Tigers. Hopefully something the Sheens looks at considering Wests need some much needed size to help beef up the pack and support the likes of Bryce Gibbs and Todd Payten. |
