ABERCROMBIE, Jim : LOCK FORWARD (Western Sub.s, NSW) One of the lesser known Kangaroos, he was an addition to the touring party after an outcry over his omission. Abercrombie was a large hulk of a man who played mostly as a front rower and demonstrated good goal kicking skills. He played in the opening two Ashes Tests before "going missing" after the tourists arrived home in 1909. He twice returned from nowhere to play for Wests - 1910 (4) / 1913 (1) - and was reportedly seen in Souths lower grades. |

Jim Abercrombie (born in Sydney, New South Wales) was an Australian rugby league player for the Wests Magpies in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership competition, he also played rugby union for Wests. His position of choice was at lock forward though his versatility meant he could play anywhere in the forwards and he often goal kicked. He originally played rugby union prior to the formation of the New South Wales Rugby League premiership in 1908 and was one of the original players to make the switch to the newly formed code. He was apart of the first national side that played against the visiting New Zealand All Golds and also was controversially a member of the first touring Australian national side to Great Britain after he was originally left out of the squad though after a public outcry over his omission he was called in, thus making him the first international player to come from the Western Suburbs club. |

Biography & Career Highlights: North Sydney RU forward (formerly with Glebe) played for NSW in 1907 against the visiting NZ ‘All Golds’ in the third match of the series. Abercrombie, a stoutly framed goal-kicking hooker/prop, attended the foundation meeting of the North Sydney RL Club in January 1908 but by the time the first professional rugby competition got underway he had transferred his services to Western Suburbs. A late call-up to the Pioneer 1908-09 Kangaroos after originally being left out of the squad, he became Wests’ first Test player when selected in the inaugural Test match between Australia and England at London’s St James Park. Abercrombie appeared in 31 of 45 games on that first tour, including two Tests. Born James Maskell in South Australia, he changed his name to Abercrombie when his mother remarried but reverted to his birth-name after his playing career had finished. A blacksmith by trade, he emigrated to NZ in search of work during the Depression and became a share farmer. |
