Western Suburbs Magpies in search of a sideline doctor

WHEN two 100kg rugby league players lock horns there’s a fair chance there’s going to be a few bruises and the occasional torn ligament or broken bone.

While it’s part and parcel of the game, players are taught safety techniques and clubs ensure there is always medical back-up on the bench.

But Western Suburbs Magpies have been unable to secure a sideline medico this season after their former doctor went overseas.

And it’s a situation which is making the NSW Rugby League club general manager Kevin Hammond anxious.

He is desperate to get a doctor on board for the remaining under-16 (Harold Matthews Shield) games and the NSW Cup season.
``We are finding it difficult to identify a replacement doctor,’’ he said.

``Ideally, we would like him or her to be from the Campbelltown or Liverpool areas so players can get follow-up assessments and treatment.

``A doctor is an important part of us looking after our players.’’

Hammond said the Magpies would prefer a season commitment from the doctor and the club, in turn, would offer a long-term relationship.

He said the position would be suitable for someone looking to specialise in sports medicine. The doctor would have the opportunity to work with the club’s surgical team and Wests Tigers training and medical staff.

The person would be available ideally for home and away games. The NSW Cup season goes through until September.

Hammond said remuneration for the position would be negotiated.

Details: Kevin Hammond on 96012002.
