NOTHING is ever black and white in Wests/Group 6 Rugby League. But Group 6 president Grahame Andrews said striping Oakdale of eight points for playing over the player points index (PPI), a non-monetary version of the NRL salary cap, was a strict interpretation of constitutional by-laws. On April 28, the undefeated Mittagong RSL first-grade leaders were stripped of all the points from their first four wins for playing their first and reserve grade teams above their allocated 300 points. The Workers said they made the Group aware of the problem in early April and was told it would be sorted out and were under the belief they wouldn’t be stripped of points. Oakdale lodged an appeal with the Country Rugby League on May 3 and the CRL appeals review board met on Monday and ruled Oakdale had no grounds for an appeal. But Worker’s secretary Tom Casey said documents supporting the appeal were sent late last week but never reached the correct CRL officials and were re-sent early this week. The CRL decided yesterday to uphold its decision to deny the appeal and referred the matter back to Group 6 because of “underlying factors” that didn’t surface during the hearing. Under the PPI, a NRL or Jim Beam Cup player is worth 40 points; a player signed from within Group 6 is worth 25; a regional division or group level representative player is worth 20; a player from outside Group 6 is worth 10; and a locally-developed player is worth two. Clubs with an under-18s team get 350 points across the three grades, while Oakdale only get 300 because they don’t have one. Andrews told the News yesterday he would review the evidence presented to the CRL by the Workers and the group’s management committee would meet with Oakdale on Tuesday to discuss the issue. Oakdale said they made former Workers secretary and now Group 6 secretary Warren Horsfield aware of the problem after round two and were told the mater would be sorted when the clubs submitted their player lists to the qualification committee after round four. Casey said if the club had known they would be docked points they never would have played over the PPI in rounds three and four. Oakdale president Clint Mason said it was naive of Oakdale not to get these verbal assurances in writing and added the PPI system was flawed The 300-point cap binds none of the four Wests clubs and Mason said he couldn’t understand why there would be two systems for one competition. Andrews said he was sick and tired of criticisms the Wests clubs were being favoured and the PPI system for 2010 was made very clear to all clubs at a general meeting in early March. He said Oakdale “knowingly” played the first four games well over the quota. Mason said the club’s undefeated streak was due to hard work, not signing star players. Moss Vale are one of four clubs to benefit from the points stripping and have been given the two points from their round one 32-24 loss. The Dragons move into third spot, while The Oaks and Picton move into sixth and seventh spot respectively. Ingleburn move three points clear of cellar dwellers All Saints. Oakdale, who haven’t lost on the field and scored 256 points this season, have been relegated to ninth. Their reserve graders won only one game in the first four rounds and will drop to second last. Dragons president Greg Burke is the only club president on the committee and will step aside on Tuesday due to his conflict of interest. Burke chose not to comment but only said Moss Vale had lost fair and square in round one. The Group did give Oakdale a 10 per cent discount allowing them 330 points from round five onwards. Casey said the team only played just outside the PPI in round one and two . But Andrews said Oakdale played as high as 80 points above the PPI. Because Oakdale has no junior club Casey said the Workers want the Group to allow players who have been at the club for two not three years to be treated as locals, and therefore worth only two instead of 25 points, Casey said the club had no problem with all clubs benefiting from its proposed rule change. Andrews said Oakdale could bring this up at the post-season club forum but the group would not change the rule this season. Moss Vale have 275 points and Mittagong are above 300. |

Galahs looks like you've been hard at wok gathering all of the above and for that we thank you it certainly creates a clearer picture however if we look at events management is lacking from those who administer the game. |

Well lets put it into context footy shorts , reading between the lines all the other sides who lost to oakdale will be getting their points also, not just moss vale. But if this is true with points being allocated to the losing sides then why hasn't the table been adjusted to reflect this decision?? As for Greg Burke leaving, he's a guy i talk to at the pub occasionaly ,he was leaving anyway due to personal/ reasons which isn't the place to discuss here, it probably looks bad with the timing of this whole thing. I know Greg Burke and have no problem with him, he is a fair bloke, but i now belive that Andrews is admitting that the first meeting and what came out if it was out of order. And if we look further into the members present at this meeting it was more than just Mossvale who had a conflict of interest. |

As a suggestion, maybe all u/18 players could be 2 pointers if they are from within Group 6 district. This would give Oakdale the same junior base as every one else if they wanted to go there. This would only be if they were under 18s or leaving 18s for the first year. |

It wont work because it will open up a can of worms.A situation which happened this year was Mittagong & Robertson poached about 8 dragons u/18 players, nearly to the point where the Moss Vale side were not going to field a team. If this rule was brought in just to help Oakdale then i can see other clubs exploiting the rule at the expense of the club players are coming from. So far Mittagong have accrued 125 points in getting 5 moss vale players 4 of which are u/18's. What would stop them or other teams from poaching the best u/18 players in the district if suddenly all u/18 players from elsewhere were worth 2 points ? Good way to strengthen key positions in the future without developing those players via the backdoor of the u/18 competiton. The group 6 bylaw states all players that progress from their jnr club must play u/18's for their parent club until they progress out of that grade.Once they hit grade they can go wherever they want. |

What if players that have just finished 18s and are in their first year of grade were worth 2 points no matter where they go to. if they are to old for 18s not all are going to make their local grade side then that would give them more options and other clubs 2 point players to add to their sides. I think the exception would be for ex SG Ball players who should be worth a higher grading. |

I must give there coach Robert melville a plug Bowral have been doing it tough of late and he has not stop putting in 100% effort and has been paitent with a young squad and got his reward today with a good win. Give these boys a few more years and they will move up the ranks. |

Heard on radio 2st this morning that they have been stripped of their points with their wins over Moss Vale,Picton & The Oaks, those points have been handed to the teams just mentioned, they kept their points win over Ingleburn. Have had their points extended to 330 for the remainder of the year. |

Any Campbelltown locals on here should get down to C'town Stadium tomorrow to watch some great footy between City and East Campbelltown. We miss our old local rivalries against the Warriors and Collies, but tomorrow will still see one hell of a battle in Reserve Grade (1pm) and First Grade (2.30pm). |

Hey this could be the motivation Oakdale need to go all the way this year!!! The "Us against them" Attitude could work in there favour. Mittagong Vs Mossy should be a big game with a massive crowd its really the talk of the town ATM. |

All Saints had their first win of the season today beating Ingleburn Bulldogs 60-30. A big effort by all concerned considering that they were behind 26-8 at half time. They put on 52 points in the second half. Congratulations to them on their win. |
