5 Year Ban For Mac Saints

MACARTHUR Saints under-18 rugby league squad and its coaching staff have been banned for five years following an on-field incident involving the referee recently.

Western Suburbs District Junior Rugby League considered the incident so serious officials went to the Saints’ Oswald Reserve home ground on Thursday night to inform club officials of its decision. There was no judiciary hearing.

It is understood a Group 6/Wests combined competition match between the Saints and Picton Magpies at Liverpool Catholic Club on August 29 deteriorated after players disagreed with a number of the referee’s calls.

The match was called early and several Saints players then allegedly intimated the referee. One was believed to have had a small pipe or stick. Wests chairman Wayne Hardy-Smith described the players’ actions as inappropriate.

“Players approached the referee in an inappropriate manner; he was abused and felt threatened,” Hardy-Smith said.

“The league determined their actions were inappropriate, and given what we believed was a serious incident the team, including coaching staff, was stood down.

At this stage it is a five-year blanket ban. There may well be an appeal process but the decision was made. That sort of behaviour cannot and will not be tolerated.”

Club president Ian Donaghy said: “We are not condoning any actions of our boys towards the refs. Wests have taken that action, whether rightly or wrongly we are not to say.

“There is an appeal process and that was explained to the boys ... The innocent boys can go through the appeal process and the club will support them. The club will not support the guilty ones.”

Donaghy said Saints were extremely disappointed as they prepared to celebrate their 30th anniversary.

Yeah, the correct appeal process means you have to come up with $500, which 18 year old from Mac Saints would have that! And how can you be guilty without a hearing, good old Wests Juniors once again. What about Collegians, 6 players bash a bouncer and that is ok to continue to play, there is far too many inconsistancies from this mob and that is why we are having the troubles with the voilance in the game, deal with Mac Saints properley and have some balls and deal with Collies, Violance can not be tolerated in any part of Society :fight:

Im unsure what happened in relation to the collegians issue and nor do i dont want to stir this debate up ,but playing devils advocate here , would the reason why that issue hasnt been addressed is because it is deemed an off field incident ??rather than the case with Mac Saints which actually took place at a game???

Im just reading your post that a bouncer presumably at a pub or club was assaulted ,would it be deemd an inhouse matter for the club or police to deal with than the league itself???

Yet the irony of both cases is the issue of violence

When it is at a aftermatch function, I have no doubt it is a rugby league matter, I am currently suspended for 12 months from the junior league for a conversation at the same pub, that took place in the off season, no club function and no, I wasn't wearing a club shirt, rule for some not others and that's typical from the junior league!

Got word today that the players appeals were successful. Apart from the main 3 offenders the rest of the team are free to play next year.
