Thorpe named joint Gary Dowling Rising Star Award winner Story : BEN MCCLELLAN http://bowral.yourguide.com.au/news/local/sport/rugby-league/thorpe-named-joint-gary-dowling-rising-star-award-winner/1939878.aspx ![]() STEVE EDGE gave one of those great politically incorrect keynote addresses on Friday night. The former Parramatta and St George legend had the Wests/Group 6 awards night audience in stiches by first informing the crowd most of them were “wally woofters” before laying into Dragons coach Willie MacDonald for his Kiwi origins. It was good night for Highlands’ teams with Moss Vale, Mittagong and Robertson players all being recognised. Moss Vale junior but under-18 Mittagong convert Matt Thorpe shared the Gary Dowling Rising Star award with Campbelltown City’s David Atuau, while Robertson under-18 skipper Tom Keft took out the division three Player of the Year award. Moss Vale weren’t happy about Thorpe’s move to the stronger Lions under-18 team but the teenager said he is happy with his move. “I just wanted to play footy. All my mates are there which made it a lot easier,” he said. Thorpe will tour the UK and France through an AIS scholarship later this year. Keft, who lead by example all year, praised the Spuds’ pack. “I didn’t think I’d win. The big, fit forward pack worked hard all year,” he said. Thorpe’s team mate Sean Whittington scored more points than any other grade winner with a mammoth 196 points to win the under-18 division one award. The Dragons’ Dan Drewe won the first grade point scorers award with 172 points, and arrived just in time to collect the trophy after coming straight from training. Only the vanquished teams were out in force with the teams fighting in the weekend’s preliminary finals still training on Friday night. Reserve Dragon Brett Cumming was the grade’s top try scorer with 15 four-pointers. But the night belonged to Narellan’s Ben Baker. The only Country player from Group 6 was the first grade top try scorer (26) as well as Player of the Year. The Dragons president Greg Bourke accepted the first grade minor premiership on behalf of an absent MacDonald. “This is the cake but we need the icing (grand final win) to make it meaningful,” he said. Oakdale’s Brendan Reeves was coach of the year, while East Campbelltown won the club championship. Volunteers Janine Moss and Marilyn Blacker’s efforts were also recognised. |
