EAGLE Vale High School’s high-flying open rugby league players will have to chose between playing in the televised grand final of the National Schoolboys Trophy at the Sydney Football Stadium or their local club grand final at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

In a grand final overlap, both games are scheduled only one hour apart on Saturday, making it impossible for players to compete in both.

Eight players are affected by the scheduling, effectively forcing a forfeit of one of the games.

The Eaglevale St Andrews v Collegians under-18s division one decider is set down for 1.30pm while the schoolboys’ match is one hour later and 50km away.

Group 6/Wests combined competition and NSW Rugby League officials met with representatives from both clubs on Monday, but no solution could be found.

There appeared to be progress on Monday when the game was rescheduled to 10.30am. But within 24 hours it was moved back to the original timeslot.

It is believed an offer to play the game at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday, before the NSW Cup semi-final between Western Suburbs Magpies and Wentworthville Magpies, was rejected.

An Eaglevale St Andrews spokeswoman declined to comment.

A Collegians spokewoman said the time change had been done without their club’s approval.

“We never agreed to it. Some of our boys would have missed work if the game was changed to 10.30am,” she said. “We need to play the game as is; that’s pretty much how it stands.

“Unfortunately, ESA is in this predicament.”

Western Suburbs District Junior Rugby League chief executive Julie Luke said the league and various parties had tried to resolve the issue for a “win win” for both clubs.

“We’ve been working with NSW Rugby League and Channel 9 to come up with some resolution,” she said. “We’re trying our best . . . the door isn’t closed.”

She said the Group 6/Wests grand final fixtures had been in place for about six weeks.

“I was only alerted to this problem on Friday,” she said.

An Eagle Vale parent said it was unfair 17- and 18-year-olds would be forced to make a choice between two equally as important games.

``They have to decide to play in a national grand final or a game they’ve worked towards all season. It’s disappointing the organisations couldn’t come to an agreement,’’ he said.

Eagle Vale High School will play Chifley College, Mt Druitt, in the National Schoolboys Trophy (the old Arrive Alive Cup second tier).

What would the "win, win" situation involve if changing the time has already backfired ?? :letmesee:
