With the demise of the combined comp this thread will be only group 6 related topics now, and have started a new topic for the 2011 season. Feel free to post any new player/coach signings, and anything else of interest. All Wests JRL related stuff now can be posted in the Wests jrl thread.

Good Question?

Maybe sharing Bargo showground with AFL thats a guess

Id say they would be playing at either Picton or Thilmere before there games

Yes Bargo contested a few GFs in the 50s and beat the Kangaroos in a Reserve Grade GF sometime around then as well. They played where the AFL ground is now. Bargo were the source of controversy in the 50s also as they had big money and paid for ring-ins from Sydney to play Sundays (all Sydney games were on Saturdays back then). My records indicate there was a Bargo team in the G6 2nd Division as late as 1973.
They wore South Sydney colours.

Heard Warwick Carter is returning to Mittagong after stints with the dragons and sharks toyota cup side, he'll be joining his brother Rob. Also the Lions have signed a front rower and their capt coach is a lock forward, unsure of the names but their from down the coast.

Yeah they have recruited well.
It will be a big test for them this year to see if they can back up their late season form, and erase the memories of their big defeats earlier in the season.

New Lions' skipper seeks new challenges
BY LAUREN WRIGHT
08 Nov, 2010 01:00 AM
MITTAGONG may have lost a great player in Daniel Alvaro, but they have gained an experienced captain-coach in Ryan Powell.

For the last two years, Powell has been with the first grade Thirroul side, which made it into the Illawarra Carlton League grand final for the last three years, and won the premiership in 2008.

He has left the club he started with as a fourteen-year-old, having been there for awhile, he said it "gets a bit old, time to move on".

Choosing Mittagong as his new club, Powell said it was a bit of "opportunity" rather than choice.

He hasn't yet met his new teammates, but is looking forward to a successful season next year.

"They're a nice young side," he said.

Not only does Powell bring years of experience to the Lions' den, he has also played for St George Dragons and reserve grade for Western Suburbs.

From 2001-2007, Powell's stint at the Dargons had him playing next to men like Trent Barrett and Jason Ryles, under the leadrship of Nathan Brown.

"I've been pretty lucky. I've had some really good quality coaching. It was an unbeleivable experience," he said.

In 2006, Powell moved to Western Suburbs to play in reserve grade for a year, before making his way back home to the Dragons.

Not yet sure just what he is looking for in his team, Powell said he hopes they are a tight knit team who will work for each other and have a good, successful season next year.
