Oakdale rule Group 6 Country Rugby League competition http://macarthur-chronicle-campbelltown.whereilive.com.au/sport/story/oakdale-rule-group-6-country-rugby-league-competition/ ![]() OAKDALE Workers Rugby League Football Club have taken out the Group 6 Country Rugby League competition first grade premiership. Oakdale edged out the Campbelltown Eagles in a high-quality display in Sunday’s grand final to win 24-16 in front of 2800 people at Kirkham Park. Coach Brendon Reeves paid tribute to his charges coming off the back of four losses to Campbelltown over the season. He singled out the efforts of second-rower Matt Macbeth, prop David Lowe and five-eighth Michael McFarlane. “This is an absolutely ecstatic result, it’s the best thing in life,” a jubilant Reeves said yesterday. “We’ll be soaking this up for the next couple of months before going back into training.” Oakdale had to see off a late challenge from Campbelltown as Eagles’ hooker Sam Hoare charged down a kick only to knock-on near the tryline as they trailed 18-16 with seven minutes to go. Campbelltown Eagles coaching and development officer Daniel Draper said it was not his team’s day. “All the games we won against them during the season were by about six points so they could have gone either way, like this one,” Draper said as he congratulated Oakdale. In the second grade grand final Draper coached and played in Campbelltown’s 24-0 thrashing of Mittagong. Draper paid tribute to his second grade side as they fought back to win after being reduced to 11 men and still managing to keep Mittagong scoreless. |

Lions end 27-year title drought http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/news/local/sport/athletics/lions-end-27year-title-drought/2298299.aspx By Lauren Wright ![]() AFTER 27 long years, Mittagong under-18s finally brought home the trophy. While many expected a close match between the young Lions and Camden Rams on Saturday, the crowd was in for a big surprise.Mittagong hit the lead early and never looked back, finishing with a 40-6 win over the Rams. The last time the under-18s won a premiership was in 1983, under current Group 6 president Grahame Andrews who was there on the sideline to support the boys. "It was outstanding . The boys just played great," coach Carl Davey said. "It's a coach's dream" In a season where the battles between the top four were always close, Davey said it was a surprise to win by such a large margin. "Camden tried hard, they threw everything at us," he said "I knew they had the potential to put scores on sides [and] the boys were really vigilant in that they did." |

Oakdale's jubilation BY SEAN CUNNINGHAM http://www.wollondillyadvertiser.com.au/news/local/sport/rugby-league/oakdales-jubilation/2298356.aspx ![]() Captain courageous: Oakdale's Todd Pes was man of the match. Picture: Chris De Jong "THE people of Oakdale are absolutely rejoicing". This was the message from Oakdale coach Brendon Reeves when his team delivered a Group 6 rugby league first grade premiership on Sunday for only the second time in the club's history. Oakdale emerged triumphant in the grand final, beating Campbelltown Eagles 24-16 in front of a huge crowd at Kirkham Park. "I think winning the grand final meant the world to them," Reeves said. "The celebrations were a bit over the top, but it's only our second premiership in 48 years. "It was a great game but it wasn't good for my heart, it probably still hasn't sunk in for me yet." The Eagles opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a try but Oakdale rallied when Glynn Bester burst through out wide to run 40 metres to score. Fullback Kyle Weh extended the Workers' lead and Shane Valentine scored in the corner to give Oakdale a 18-10 lead at the break, but the Eagles were first to score in the second half to bring the score back to 18-16. With three minutes remaining Sam Conlon scored Oakdale's winning try. Reeves said his team stuck to their game plan which was rewarded with a premiership win. "In the first half the Eagles were outstanding — no doubt about it, but our second half was absolutely outstanding," he said. "We knew it would be hot so our game plan was to keep the ball in play and finish our sets. "We wanted to make them work down in their own end of the field and their big guys started to get tired by us doing that." Although Oakdale had already been beaten four times by the Eagles this season, they kept their best performance for the crunch game. "The Eagles were a very, very good side and I think you could only beat them once a season," Reeves said. "I feel for them and their coaches, it's never easy being the best side all year and not winning the premiership. "It's tough to take." Workers' captain Todd Pes, who was man of the match, attracted the praise of his coach. "He kicked well and played well for the full 80 minutes," Reeves said. "David Lowe was tremendous, too. He deserves every accolade he gets and I was pleased for Matt McBeth; some said he has played for Oakdale for the last 18 years." Although unsure what the future holds, Reeves is keen to coach this season's premiers again next season. |

Cheers Mate. The Campbelltown Eagles will be a very sucessful club in the group. It's up to every other club, including Oakdale to strive for continued improvement to either match or better you guys. You are still the benchmark. |

TC- Roos forever does not speak for our footy club & shouldn't post after drinking 12 longnecks. He should stick to doing what he does best. Congratulations on the premiership win, richly deserved reward for a well run footy club. As for anyone who questions our Group 6 pedigree- I have the same answer- the 2011 competition was fantastic and closely contested... Or would they prefer to revert to the 5 team 1st & Reserve Grade comps of 2008? |

G6 lads take on the Brits http://www.wollondillyadvertiser.com.au/news/local/sport/rugby-league/g6-lads-take-on-the-brits/2298359.aspx FORMER Thirlmere/Tahmoor player and coach Jamie Horner will head to Britain on Saturday as head coach of a squad of Group 6 representative players aged 16 to 18. The 2011 Group 6 British team will compete during the 14-day tour against Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls, St Helens, Salford and England development teams. Horner said the exposure and experience the players would gain on tour would be "priceless and the opportunity of a lifetime to represent Australia". "The doors that will open and the knowledge that will be gained will not only be valuable for a sportsperson but in life as well," Horner said. UFO Gym Tahmoor owner Horner, who has more than 30 years experience of playing and coaching in Group 6 will join coach Harvey Howard, a former English professional rugby league footballer of the 1990s and 2000s. He was a Great Britain and England international representative, and played club football for Widnes, Leeds, Bradford and Wigan. In Australia he played for Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Western Suburbs Magpies and Brisbane Broncos. Horner thanked the business people and other members of the community who have been involved and donated funds |

Well done oakdale the better team won on the day and that's all that counts, this is my first time I've been on here since losing the gf. The group 6 comp is probably the best senior comp I've played in and I've played in 3 campbelltown eagles have made a home for themselves where we are and enjoy where we train and play, we will continue to strive. Once again congrats oakdale and group 6 |

Just a slight correction Orana: it was 6 teams in 1sts and reserves in 2008. And considering there are only 2 Campbelltown teams in group 6 now, we'd still be up to 8 and 8 through natural progression anyway. In saying that, I have nothing against either Campbelltown club. I was very much against the group 6/wests merger, but I see nothing wrong with the current situation: clubs applying to join the group and being accepted on their merits. 2011 is the most evenly contested 1st grade comp I've ever seen. By far. Things are looking good for 2012. |
