Strong bond: Magpies player Chris Bowers (from left), first-grade coach Mat Davies and president Darren Jones are looking for a successful Group 6 rugby league season.Picture: Jonathan Ng
PICTON Rugby League Football Club's impressive Group 6 form on the field has led to five members being named in this season's Group 6 24-man squad for Country Rugby League regional senior championships.
The five to wear the representative colours are Alex Peters, Bryce Poisel, Chris Young, Kiel Shephard and Mark Brasington.

There could have been more Magpies named in the squad if it wasn't for injuries, said first-grade coach Mat Davies.

"Matt Eckler and Chris Bowers would've been considered as well if they weren't injured," he said.

"The players who were picked — I rate them highly. They're the core of the club."

Picton president Darren Jones, who played his first rugby league game as a Magpies under-15s player, said the representative players would shine at the championships if given the chance to play in the starting team.

"They'll excel," he said. "They're very dedicated and talented and they'll give 100 per cent.

"Poisel is a Picton junior and he's one of our best players. He's a good halfback.

"Chris Young is a fit front-rower. He's a real tough, handy player.

"Kiel Shephard is the captain and he's a real leader.

"He's a very versatile player who can play anywhere but his preferred position is second row."

Jones said the club members had forged a strong bond since the recent tragic event the club had experienced.

Magpies' players Peter Molden and Lachlan Simpson lost their lives in a motor-vehicle accident.

Another incentive the club has introduced is first-graders attending junior training sessions, to become more involved with juniors.

"My brother Luke has played a massive part with his fresh ideas," Davies said.

"Our goal is just to be a Picton club, instead of Picton seniors and Picton juniors."

Davies said the Magpies were proud to have produced several players who have went on to play at a higher level, including NRL, which gives the current crop of juniors an incentive to achieve their goals.

The CRL championships are set to be played on Saturday, May 28, at West Wyalong in the state's central west.

I have been told Troy Gibbs has been dumped from the rep side. I am unsure how he even got selected considering has has not played any competition games this year and did not play G6 at all last year?

Sam Hoare has allegedly been given a 5 week suspension from normal games for not turning up to training due to work commitments.
Surely this is an over the top penalty for this. I dont think even at NRL level this would happen.

This isnt new, unless the club sends a letter to the group explaining the situation then anyone can use work as an excuse not to train. 5 weeks would be the length of the rep season so he wouldnt be able to play until rep games have finished.Welcome to group 6 guys

*Just an article on the group 11 side group 6 will be facing, wondering why they havent selected their team yet ,they are naming tonight.

Selectors eyeing Runciman
BEN WALKER
http://www.dailyliberal.com.au/news/local/sport/rugby-league/selectors-eyeing-runciman/2162767.aspx

Fresh from being named in the NSW Country under-18s side, Dubbo CYMS fullback Charly Runciman could be a surprise selection in the Group 11 side to contest the NSW Country Championships when the squad is named this weekend.
Runciman was a vital part of the Western Rams side which won the Tom Nelson Shield last Friday at Albury and some solid form for the Fishies while filling in for injured coach Blake Tremain-Cannon could see him selected for his first senior representative squad.

Group 11 selectors, as well as coach Darren Jackson, have been at competition games during the first two rounds and Jackson said a few positions were still up for grabs.

“I don’t actually get much of a say in the team, more a casting vote if the selectors are split,” he said.

“I haven’t spoken to them a great deal yet but from what I can gather they are settled on some positions and not on others.

“The selectors and myself will watch the matches this weekend and the team will be picked from there.”

With Parkes premiership player Dennis Moran unavailable for rep duties, spots are available in the halves with Forbes’ Adam Hall likely to figure in discussions after leading the Magpies to wins in their opening two matches.

Spacemen hooker and Papua New Guinean representative Benjamin John will fill the number nine jumper.

Others being considered for spots include Macquarie trio Ash Conn, Moses Manu and Jade Williams, Dubbo CYMS tough back-rower Chris Thompson and Wellington’s excitement machine Corey Stanley.

Once it is named the squad will have just a week to prepare for its opening match against Group 6 at West Wyalong.

“It’s going to be a really short preparation for us and with the tournament being knockout I’m just hopeful it’s enough of a preparation,” Jackson said.

“In an ideal world the team probably would have been picked last weekend. That would have given the guys an extra week to know they were in the side and given us the chance to have an extra training run together.

“But the Group decided to give the players an extra match to prove themselves and I’m pretty confident we will have a very good side when it is named.”

Toomey-White earns spot in Group 11 pack

Justin Toomey-White has turned his back on a career in the NRL with the Canterbury Bulldogs to rejoin Wellington Cowboys - and earn a place in the Group 11 pack for the Country Championships.
Selectors last night announced their team for the knockout match against Group 6 at West Wyalong on Saturday, May 28. Four Country matches will be played on the day with Group 11 having the early game at 9am. Group 11 will be coached by Darren Jackson, the former Country player of the year.

Toomey-White has been playing Toyota Cup with the Bulldogs this season after being with Wellington in their grand final defeat against Parkes last year.

The other selection surprise was that of Dennis Moran as captain and five-eighth, after it was thought that he wasn’t available for rep football.

Moran’s teammate Mick Doig, who has been playing halfback for the Spacemen, gets a run at his favoured lock position. He’s been ultra impressive this season after coming to Parkes from Newtown.

Group 11 will field two of last year’s New Guinea World Cup forwards, hooker Benjamin John and prop Rodney Pora, as well as the flashy Fijian winger Marika Korovi - all from Parkes.

One of the new faces on the Group 11 selection committee this year is John Croft, a long time servant of the Macquarie Raiders.

Group 11 president Ross McDermott was chairman of the committee that was also made up of Mark Forrester (Dubbo), Trent McQuillan (Wellington) and Derek Hoe (Parkes).

Croft was on hand to watch the game at Apex Oval yesterday and before the kick-off admitted that the process had been a tough one.

“We’ve had selectors at all the three competition games and also at the Skilled Challenge pre-season, so we’ve seen plenty of football,” he said.

“But that hasn’t made it any easier to sort out the players.

“When you consider that we had Joe Williams (Dubbo CYMS) injured and Blake Tremain-Cannon (Dubbo CYMS) and Zac Rennick (Macquarie) unavailable, it opened up selection for some key positions.

There was also some thought that teenage CYMS fullback Charly Runciman would get a run, that didn’t happen, with Richard Peckham (Wellington) the chosen one.

Group 11: 1 Richard Peckham (Wellington), 2 Marika Korovi (Parkes), 3 Rohan Orcher (Parkes), 4 Jade Williams (Macquarie), 5 Corey Stanley (Wellington), 6 Dennis Moran (captain, Parkes), 7 Adam Hall (Forbes), 8 James Hunt (Parkes), 9 Benjamin John (Parkes), 10 Ash Conn (Macquarie), 11 Pat Rosser (Parkes), 12 Justin Toomey-White (Wellington), 13 Mick Doig (Parkes). Interchange: 14 Chris Thompson (Dubbo CYMS), 15 Dave Robinson (Forbes), 16 Chris Daley (Macquarie), 17 Rodney Pora (Parkes).

Rookie coach Jackson looking forward to Country Championships
BEN WALKER
http://www.dailyliberal.com.au/news/local/sport/rugby-league/rookie-coach-jackson-looking-forward-to-country-championships/2166031.aspx

Group 11 coach Darren Jackson knows he has some serious ammunition at his disposal in the Country Championships - now he just has to figure out how best to use it.
Selectors named a strong 17-man squad on Sunday night ahead of Group 11’s first knockout match against Group 6 at West Wyalong on May 28.

Now it is the job of rookie coach Jackson - a former NSW Country player of the year - to gel the squad together before that date.

“It’s going to be a challenge but it’s one I’m looking forward to,” Jackson said.

“The thing in my favour is that these guys are all really good footballers and they know how to play the game.

“They are all fit and smart footballers, my job is to get them to come together as a team in a short space of time.”

Eight of the 17 players are from the all-conquering Parkes Spacemen, including captain Dennis Moran who was a late inclusion in the team.

Prior to Sunday’s team announcement it was believed Moran had made himself unavailable for representative commitments however the former Parramatta Eel had a change of heart and will wear the number six jumper.

“We will be a better side for having Dennis in there, that is for sure,” Jackson said.

“Any side that has him in there will be strengthened, you only have to look at what he has achieved to realise that.”

Joining Moran in the side will be fellow Spacemen Marika Korovi, Rohan Orcher, James Hunt, Pat Rosser, Mick Doig, Rodney Pora and hooker Benjamin John, who scored five tries in Parkes’ emphatic 94-12 win over the previously unbeaten Wellington on Sunday.

The combination of those players will be used by Jackson in the lead-up to the West Wyalong match.

“I personally believe that the more combinations you can bring from club football to rep football the better,” he said.

“If the best 17 players come from one club, I’m not concerned.

“We have eight players from Parkes who play footy together every week, including our hooker and five-eighth, and I think that will only strengthen the side.

“Group 6 will be handy side but I think we have picked a team to beat them.” The Group 11 side will have its first training session at Narromine this Friday night.

GROUP 11

1. Richard Peckham (Wellington), 2. Marika Korovi (Parkes), 3. Rohan Orcher (Parkes), 4. Jade Williams (Macquarie), 5. Corey Stanley (Wellington), 6. Dennis Moran (captain, Parkes), 7. Adam Hall (Forbes), 8. James Hunt (Parkes), 9. Benjamin John (Parkes), 10. Ash Conn (Macquarie), 11. Pat Rosser (Parkes), 12. Justin Toomey-White (Wellington), 13. Mick Doig (Parkes). Interchange: 14. Chris Thompson (CYMS), 15. Dave Robinson (Forbes), 16. Chris Daley (Macquarie), 17. Rodney Pora (Parkes)

With the last weekends round out of the way , have the selectors finalised the group 6 side now taking into account suspensions, injuries etc as the rep game against group 11 starts this weekend. I'd like to do a blog about the upcoming game so if anyone knows the side it would be appreciative.

Heard from a pretty reliable source that Dennis Moran has pulled out of the group 11 side with former South Sydney half Joe Williams taking his place. Group 11 also have a few of PNG and Fiji Internationals playing for them.

Toomey-White given all clear to play in Group 11 squad
BEN WALKER
http://www.dailyliberal.com.au/news/local/sport/rugby-league/toomeywhite-given-all-clear-to-play-in-group-11-squad/2176316.aspx

Wellington’s Justin Toomey-White has been given the all clear to travel to West Wyalong with the Group 11 squad after an official release from Canterbury was granted yesterday.
The former Bulldogs Toyota Cup player will link with the side today, despite not playing a game for the Cowboys since returning from Sydney.

Group 11 will meet Group 6 in their first match of the NSW Country Championships at West Wyalong tomorrow morning, with the Group’s president and selector Ross McDermott adamant the side will be competitive.

“We had a training run at Narromine last Friday and the good thing was everyone was keen and eager to play for Group 11,” McDermott said.

“We held our breath a bit last weekend because there was a round of matches to be played and we were still waiting on Justin’s clearance.

“But all of the boys got through unscathed and we look to have the clearance so it is all systems go.”

The side will leave Dubbo at 7am today before training at 9am in Forbes.

The move is designed to give the side a taste of what to expect the following day.

“We’re in the unenviable position of having a 9am game on Saturday so it will be nice and cold,” McDermott said.

“The boys will have a run in it at Forbes on Friday just to give them an idea of what it will be like on Saturday.

“In saying that Group 6 will be playing in the same conditions so it is just a matter of who adapts to it best.

“Ash Conn was saying the other day he hasn’t played a 9am game since about the under-12s so it will be interesting for sure.”

Rookie coach Darren Jackson has brought on board strong support crew that includes Tom Gray and Gavin Board as managers, with Graham Bennett given the task to relay messages to the team.

Narromine duo Pat Walker and Tony Mann will act as trainers for the team.

“It’s a good crew and Darren has really brought a breath of fresh air to the job as coach,” McDermott said.

“I think we have an exciting team, particularly in our backline, and I can’t wait to see what the likes of Joe Williams, Dennis Moran, Corey Stanley, Jade Williams and Richard Peckham can do when put in a team together.”
