Campbelltown Eagles Media Release 22-7-2012

1st Grade Campbelltown Eagles 26 def Mittagong 16

On Sunday the Campbelltown Eagles played Mittagong in the top of the table clash at Waminda Oval. The enthusiastic crowed braved the miserable conditions but the teams made sure it was worth it with some big hits throughout the game. The Eagles Posted first points when Sean Connor showed plenty of speed to get outside his man to score out wide, the Conversion from Harding was unsuccessful, The Eagles then had Brett Lahey sent from the field for striking which left the Eagles to play the rest of the game with 12 men.
This didn’t deter the Eagles when they scored again next to the posts through Michael Bradstock and Harding converted for the Eagles to go to 10 nil, The Eagles hit back again straight away when Grant Lahey in support scored out wide, Harding missed the Conversion for the Eagles to go to 14-nil, Mittagong through centre Braiden Grote scored before the break and the conversion from Warwick Carter was successful and they went into the Break at 14-6
The second half became a tight tussle but the Eagles showed their strength through big Fred Tevega busting 3 defenders to score next to the posts and Will Dreves converted to make the Eagles 20-6, Mittagong replied with a try to Scott Borg 20 minutes remaining to give them an opportunity at 20-10 but the game was put in doubt when a clever kick from Sammy Hoare was put through to Will Dreves to score near the posts, Brayden Grote scored his second for Mittagong Lions to finish the game at 26-16, best for the Eagles where Samual Hoare, Wayde Dunley, and Michael Bradstock while the Men of the Match honours went to Sean Connor
Coach Richard Barnes said “I was pleased with the team’s efforts and especially being down to 12 men, Mittagong are a well drilled side and will be hard to beat come semis, they were down 4 players today and showed that they are a quality team.

I see the Macarthur Bulls got pumped on the weekend, there style of bashing sides is not working in Group 6 and the little white whippets are just to quick for there hand picked team of stars, you must be guttered Footymum, back to the wests junior league for you and your boys next year. Your teams antics killed any chance we had to form a under 19's competition this year that has seen us travel all over the city, makes me so happy to see you not even making the top 4 in Group 6. Will ESA take you and your boys back?

THE struggle continues in Country Rugby League's Group 6 first-grade competition with Campbelltown Eagles still setting the pace but five other teams still in the play-offs race.

The Eagles showed their dominance in the top-of-the-table clash with Mittagong at Waminda Oval on Sunday. Displaying plenty of early clout, the Eagles raced to a 14-0 lead before the Lions rallied to get the game back to 20-10.

While the 26-16 scoreline favoured the Eagles, the Lions did give them something to think about.

Over at Kirkham Park, Campbelltown City Kangaroos and Camden put on their own show in a bottom half of the ladder clash.

The Rams got the better of the Kangaroos 20-6, with both teams destined to use the remainder of 2012 to plan for the upcoming year. The Eagles, Thirlmere/Tahmoor, Mittagong and Narellan round out the competition top four with Picton and Oakdale close by.

Disappointing draw for Dragons
By Lauren Wright
http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/142915/disappointing-draw-for-dragons/?cs=264

A HORRIBLE first half left Moss Vale Dragons with little choice but to settle for a 28-28 draw with Campbelltown Eagles on Sunday. In their first morning match of the season, Dragons skipper Damian Barton said it looked like no one wanted to be there and they underestimated their opponents.

When these two teams last met, the Eagles were understrength and the match was called off 20 minutes early.

"Everyone went in thinking it was going to be a bit of walk in the park. They played really well, they had an easy game plan and they stuck to it" Barton said.

"We just played horribly for most of the game. I was a bit disappointed after the weekend."

While Barton said he was not happy with the attitude in the first half, the Dragons put in a better second half performance after trailing 22-6 at halftime.

"Blokes had a bit more of a dig in the second half and we scored four tries in 10 minutes."

In his first week back for Moss Vale after a five week suspension, Barton said Brad Meuelman put in a good effort for the entire match, as did his brother Steve and Jack Webb.

With a make up match against Bundanoon this Saturday, Barton said they needed to "turn up ready to play."

"The boys are pretty keen to play Bundy. We haven't played two good halves of footy this year. We need to play for the full 70 minutes."

Moss Vale still sit second on the ladder, seven points behind competition leaders Macarthur Bulls.

They are just one point above Warragamba and three points above the Eagles who round out the top four

Lions fall short of benchmark
By Lauren Wright
http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/142914/lions-fall-short-of-benchmark/?cs=264

MITTAGONG first grade Lions found themselves up against the benchmark of the competition when they faced Campbelltown Eagles on Sunday. But with several players missing they fell short and went down 26-16.

Mittagong had only 11 fresh players take the field for the match and coach Scott Borg said he was proud of the team for the effort they put in.

"I'm not really disappointed. The boys really stuck in. They're one of the strongest sides we've played all year and they're the benchmark for the competition," he said.

"It was a good wake up call for us. We need to try to match their enthusiasm and be a bit smarter with the ball for the next three games going into the semis."

With rain falling which made holding onto the ball difficult, Borg said everyone made a few mistakes throughout the match but overall it was a good effort by Mittagong.

They will be fighting to cement second spot against Thirlmere-Tahmoor this weekend.

"I don't think we're travelling too bad. We're still a fair bit behind the Eagles. If we beat Thirlmere we'll nearly secure second spot."

Borg said Brayden Groth had his best game of the season, scoring a couple of tries, setting up the third try and also making a try saving tackle.

Mittagong still sit second on the ladder but are on equal points with Thirlmere which will make Sunday's contest a crucial one to win.

Two on the trot for Bundy

By Lauren Wright
http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/142917/two-on-the-trot-for-bundy/?cs=264

BUNDANOON showed how much they have improved on the weekend with a 40-8 win over Bowral. The last time the two teams met, Bundanoon snuck home a try in the dying minutes of the match to win 10-6.

And while it was the first time this season Bundanoon have strung two wins in a row together, coach Brett Breeze said they still needed to start playing for the full 70 minutes if they were to remain in finals contention.

"It ended up a pretty comfortable win. It was a bit scrappy in the first half but we out things together and played some good football in the second half. The first half was really bad ball handling," he said.

"If we can ever string two good halves of football together I think we'd frustrate any team. We're still working on it."

Kyal Martin had a good game scoring two tries and kicking six from seven conversions.

"He had a pretty good day with the boot," Breeze said.

Ben Palk, Corey Webber, Pete Randazzo and Sam Perkins all crossed the line for Bundanoon.

Breeze said Sam Burnham and martin played well in the backs while Perkins and Mitch Hewson were the standout forwards.

With a few players out of position on the weekend, Breeze said it may have contributed to their first half errors but was happy with the way they regrouped at halftime.

"We can compete with most teams, we just need to try and get that bad half of footy out of our game."

They will play a rematch of the abandoned match against Moss Vale this Saturday at Bundanoon Oval and Breeze said he hoped they could use their performance against Bowral as motivation heading into Saturday's match.

"This is the first time we've had two consecutive wins. Hopefully we can carry some of that form into the game (against Moss Vale) and give them a run for their money."

In other second grade matches, Robertson came as close as anyone this season to beating leaders Macarthur Bulls.

But the Bulls showed their class to take home the points with a 28-26 win

Comeon Ronnie shouldn't throw stones, Collies struggled and was flogged numerous times this year, ( only won when they had a bye) then to have begged the ICCC to put them down into 2nd division to become competitive. Not much competition with the collies having numerous wests harold mats players and two training with the toyota cup team playing in their squad.
Bulls have stood their ground and have had some competitive games and have at least remained in 1st's, in a much stronger comp.
Doubt that the boys will ever want to return to the same as what they had with wests, when now they have seen the grass is greener on the other side in a great competition such as group 6. The bulls are going ok, considering only establishing 18's in the group 6 comp.

Congratulations to Campbelltown Eagles retaining the Campbelltown Cup today. They are a very good team and definitely Clayton Cup bound, by the look of things. Way too good for our boys today.

Good to see Liberal Campbelltown Councillors Paul Hawker and George Griess up at the Fortress today with Chris Bannerman from Men Of League. All 3 presented the Cup to Eagles skipper John Da Silva, not the first piece of silverware they'll receive this year, I'm sure.

The Kangaroos would like to thank the support of members of the Eagles and Bulls clubs who so generously donated to the bucket collection to send Rua Ngati Jnr and Henry Lealuga-Puhotau to Mackay for the NSW PSSA team to play Queensland, and the Associated States.

Between the Court Tavern and today at the Fortress, the senior Kangaroos club has raised $835 to send the boys' families to Mackay this week to watch them play for NSW PSSA. Good luck boys, the whole Kangaroo club is very proud of you both.

First home loss for Bundanoon

.
BUNDANOON suffered their first loss at home on Saturday against Moss Vale, going down 50-12.

It was the first time the two teams have met this season and while Bundanoon did their best to compete, they could not keep up with the pace of the Dragons.

Bundanoon coach Brett Breeze said it was a good effort but, despite their improvement throughout the season, they could not match Moss Vale.

"We showed glimpses of the team we can be but we didn't turn up in defence and they played a fast, up-tempo game which had us on the back foot for most of the match," he said.

"It was the first time we've played them and we'll be better for the experience. Hopefully we can put up a better performance next time we meet them. The boys never stopped trying and they did their best but they played a very fast game of football. They're a pretty well drilled side and we just had a struggle to keep up with them."

Dane Trompet crossed the line for Bundanoon in the first half and with the score 22-6 at halftime, Breeze said he thought they had the potential to threaten the Dragons in the second half.

But Moss Vale came out fired up in the second half to add a further 28 points, while Mark Johnston was the only try scorer for Bundanoon.

In the forwards, Breeze said Mick Johnston, Paul Quigg and Mitch Hewson all put in solid performances while Sam Burnham and Mark Johnston in the backs were the standouts.

Breeze said their key mistake was being drawn into the middle of the ruck and condensing their defence, which allowed the Dragons to attack out wide where they did most of their damage.

"We need to work on our defence and not be drawn into condensing our defence and have a look out wide.

"Up until yesterday we were undefeated at home. In our first season that's a pretty fair achievement for a new club. We're looking forward to Warragamba this week. We competed well with them in the first round so I'm hoping we can get another surprise win up."

Beat again by city the bulls 18s side which looks to have pushed them out of semi contention.
Looking back the good oil had them as being the strongest in the group in 18s so it's fair to say they have been a failure. Hopefully some stay on and build the club given thier 2nd division is going well.

What was the problem footy mum anything in particular? Some much hype but poor results surely the club will want answers what failed. Maybe a few wins to finish the year off on a posative.

I won't waste my time replying to Ronny but as for your question no the year didn't go as well as we hoped for a few reasons. Not once did we play a game with more than 16 players most weeks we only had 14, we had 2 players not given permission by west to play because they were on contract regardless of what was best for the player, another player that was on suspension from last year not cleared until the ESA 18's played 8 rounds and we all know how long that took with all the washouts, another player injured in the first round who had to have surgery, another not given permission from the group until the end of june and two players that had car accidents ruling them out and other injuries through out the season. Playing against squads of 17-20 players nearly every week put a strain on all the players with some of them carrying injuries into games each week.
I dont want to make excuses for the the boys as they will be pissed at me if i do but it has been a hard season for us the players came together from different clubs, not a hand picked super side as some idots claim, some of the boys had not played last season at all but we have still done what we set out to do and that was to play competitive footy every week, myself or the players never claimed that we would take out the group 6 comp or dominate it they were others peoples words the boys just wanted to play footy each week which by evidence of this season they wouldn't of if they stayed in the west comp.
 I am proud of all my boys and the effort they put in, someone has to win each week and unfourtanetly it wasnt us. Credit to the other group 6 18's and their training staff though they all put in every week and have welcomed the boys and all our staff into the comp.
As for others (and yes ronny i will reply to you after all) who like to stir the pot and can't seem to get over previous years. Yes I am gutted because I have had to watch my own son get injured be in pain and not be able to play out his season or work but i am not gutted over how my team did at all they stayed in a 1st division comp playing competitive footy every week but I hope you have enjoyed your season because the word I am hearing from your players and players from other west teams is they have had enough and this season has been a big waste of time, some would even like to ask for their rego money back because they hardly played any footy, blaming me for my so called antics and for you having to travel all over the city is hilarious I am just one ordinary mother who volunteers my time because I love my boys and the game but thanks for thinking that I had so much power that what we did ruined an already failing competition. ;)

Fair enough footymum. Mate of mine son plays for the Oaks they are struggling also but he says you guys still had a few Southern division reps and 2 SG Ball players so maybe if you added the 2 you say you missed out on would not have been allowed as I'm told Group 6 only allow 2 SG ball per team I could be wrong be mYbe why you missed out on them.

You have the Oaks in a few weeks should be a good game best of luck hopefully a win around the corner.
